If you have an elementary age child in FCPS

K and 3rd grade - 1 hour each day Monday - Thursday, plus teacher has 1 hour office hours per day to ask questions or review. Lots of online assignments as well and optional assignments.

Yes, true about your tittle 1 schools. I work at one and they didn't do much until last week and laptops were just distributed. Attendance is very low for Live sessions as well.

It is also true: Title 1 parents won't complain/don't log in/don't have enough devices/have other things going on.

My kids attend "$$$" schools and have been doing Google Classroom, review work, educational videos, games and links.
At my kids school, Parents complain/log in/have plenty of devices (ipads, iphones, laptops, computers, etc.) and have nothing better to do than to be on top of their kids (those helicopter moms!)

Oh, and my son also got a laptop before "spring break".

Same county, two different worlds!

4th grader

Daily: 15 minute morning meeting, 45 minutes of math, and 45 minutes of language arts

They also have a ton of assignments on Google classroom. The assignments have been thoughtful and they are moving along nicely with new material.

I meant to add that the teachers also do break out groups when needed. My kid is joining one for a little extra help in math.

Anonymous wrote:3rd and 6th grade. 2-4 hours per day available between math and LA, office hours and specials. Mine are not in band or orchestra or it would be more. Mine are averaging logging on 1-2 hours and we may cut that back. Most of this is not interactive and are slideshow presentations they are watching. The students are muted and chat is off. It’s okay for something to do but they can watch the recordings at any time. They are not going to office hours and cutting back on specials already. It’s simply additional screen time without added benefit. No fault of the teachers. They are trying. Low FARMs school.

And a lot of google classroom assignments which they complete. Those are more valuable with feedback than the scheduled classes.

I agree. The recorded lessons followed up by assignments in Classroom have been much more efficient than trying to do live lessons with a class.

4th grader

1 hr M-Th live class (hope they get rid of this and just post recorded lessons)
Many daily assignments including specials

4th

1 hour live M-Th.

A heavy amount of daily assignments from teacher. I am asked for help throughout the day on various item, so they aren’t really independent - at least for my kid.

Separate choice board area for specials. Hard for kid to remember to check, and rarely done with all the assignments already from main teacher.

1st grader in a former Title 1 school (mixed SES). 1 hour live instruction per day plus optional office hours, and recordings and activities from the specials. I think it's plenty for this age. However, there is no differentiation and that's frustrating.

Mon Thurs - 30 minutes live each day. There is an Optional 1 hour office hours where the teacher is live, I'm not quite sure what to do with that and it's at lunch time for us, so I really haven't pursued having her logon. The live is Morning Meeting, story time and today they did an activity.

There are also daily prerecorded lessons for Language Arts, Math, Science and Social Studies. They are usually independent activities attached. My child tends to have a hard time paying attention to these. She has had attention issues prior but the teachers and pediatrician don't think it warranted testing but that was back in February. We use Blackboard Ultra for the Live and the prerecorded stuff is on Blackboard Learn and now Google classroom as a backup. Nothing is being turned in. No provision to do it.

Are these created by the teachers or just random youtube videos?

They are mostly teacher created, although sometimes they will use a Brian Pop or something similar. One teacher is doing cool science stuff with props.

We are at an AAP center in a high SES neighborhood.

Mon-Thurs 1 hour live instruction + 1 hour live office hour
Daily Language Arts and Math Assignments

Specials have posted some assignments but we have not attempted.

I am making kids study social studies and science separately. Kids also read for leisure 1-4 hours per day.

Not title 1. One 20 minute session in the morning and one in the afternoon Monday - Thursday. Definitely seems like the school has totally punted. Up to the parents to ensure kids keep learning.

Please stop. It’s the second continuous day of instruction, and you’re whining about lack of differentiation during a one hour lesson in a pandemic. You sound ridiculous.

What happened to the packets?

Were they just busywork before live instruction?

Honestly I didn’t really look at them but made my kids do the packets that were mailed to us. My 3rd grader got 3 packets and my 5th grader got 2. Not sure what happened to the third packet.

3rd grade. Morning Meeting is a slide show every morning, M-TH. Math and language arts lessons (LA alternating reading and writing) M-TH. SS or Science each day. Last week was SS and this week science. Lessons are recorded videos by the teachers and sometimes incorporate FCPS video lessons. Corresponding work is completed in Classroom. Live office hours M-TH at 8 am, 1:00 pm and 5 pm. There are additional office hours at 7 pm on Wednesday. Live class meetings or read aloud (1x a week?) started last week.

3rd grader in LLIV at a low FARMs school - 20 min morning meeting; as of next week 40 min live LA or Math (alternate days); 1 hour office hours by appointment. Teachers have been posting slides or videos. Some are good. Others very much are not. Hodgepodge of assignment formats. 4 teachers (across the grade)

6th grader at AAP center school with low/moderate FARMs rate - 1 hour LA/SS/Science on M/T/W. 1/2 hour math Th. 1 hour office hours a day. Assignments being posted and seems to be working well.
