My 6th grader at an ES is only getting 30 minutes per day, three times a week, total. It is frustrating that other 6th graders are getting so much more instruction. |
I hope that if we have to do distance learning in the fall, FCPS will standardize what the schools are doing. It's so unfair to hear about other kids having more one on one time with teachers, getting reading groups, math groups, etc, when my DD has one hour a day of whole grade sessions. |
I agree. I just noticed this thread in recent topics. My child has been taught nothing by a teacher since schools closed. Her school finally started distance "learning" this week and the teacher just seems to be buying time until the end of the year with morning meeting, feel good word of the week, show and tell, etc. They only meet 45 min twice a week. The teacher started reading a chapter book. Out loud reading to 5th graders. |
I don’t understand why some are saying their students are receiving no new content. At my grade level we have taught poetry and are starting persuasive reviews in language arts. We are moving ahead with ancient cultures in SS. In math we started two digit by one digit multiplication and area. All new content. Much of it is pre-recorded, but some has been synchronous and we have been expanding that. |
I’m not giving my students “new” content. Their ability to truly learn and retain it right now is questionable. What’s doable for some is stressful and overwhelming for others. I have no way to truly assess if they grasped the material in order to build on it. If teachers want to do it, I think it’s fine, but it’s also effort that’s not going to achieve a great ROI. We will be repeating it next year for them. I am focusing on going deep and reinforcing skills the kids need to go into the next grade but I’m just not overloading them with tons of new info. |
Because everyone’s child isn’t in your class. |
How do you “not understand” this? There was a post right above yours that would help you understand, and 11 other pages of comments. What do you not “understand”? |
Because many Teachers are not doing this. DS Teachers have been doing new work but many Teachers are not. |
Please, please, please email your principal and region superintendent if your child's teacher is not providing at least 4 hours of synchronous learning (and additional office hours) during the week. Merely complaining on DCUM will not fix the problem! |
Sorry. I should have phrased that differently. I was thinking more along the lines of, “I don’t understand why students aren’t receiving new content”. |
Sorry. I’m my mind I was think more of, “I don’t understand why parents are having to report that students are not receiving new content. The pacing provides for new content to be taught”. I believe you. I don’t know why they aren’t receiving it. |
Nobody attends office hours. Literally nobody except the teachers. We are dropping all but 30 minutes a day. |
Are you surprised that no one is using office hours? How can children have questions about stuff if you are not providing them with any new content or if you ARE providing new content, it is the most basic of basic content. On top of all of that, students aren't receiving ANY feedback, so how can they have questions if they don't know if the work they are doing is correct or not?? You'd be better off using your office hours for one on one time (10 minutes per student once per week should do it) or reading/math groups. I have been a staunch defender of teachers on this board, but after two weeks of instruction, I'm really not sure what you guys are spending all your time on. |
We aren’t allowed to do 1:1 meets with kids online . Much of parents’ complaints come from what the district tells us we can or can’t do. You’re mad but you shouldn’t direct it at us. We have no say either. |
Maybe increasing synchronous lessons would be helpful instead of just reducing the office hours. |
