Drugs

That student had friends at a variety of schools in DC area because their K-8 class continued onto a mix of public/private and also through sports connections. The student had shared that drugs seemed to be present at all schools pretty much equally. It didn't matter whether it was private or public and it didn't matter which private. Some kids had pretty severe issues, others less so....but it exists everywhere and it's key to just teach your child about the dangers and how to make good choices.

+1

This is our experience as well. You may delay use in a private, but in the end all of the schools have some level of a drug culture and it’s all about open communication with your kids...

My DD graduated from a school mentioned above last year and was surprised to find fewer hard drugs being offered in college than in the upper nw private scene. There are also a few bad parental apples who actually give it to their kids thinking at least they know where it came from.

Coke????

No way! They are obviously talking about meth and heroin.

So much normalizing going on here.

This is the situation at GDS as well. Anyone claiming GDS has a bigger drug problem is uninformed. My kid has a fairly social group of friends and in 9th-10th no one is using hard drugs but I've heard that some kids have smoked weed. Some kids drink too. Neither seems to be that common (and I personally don't consider one worse than the other). Have never heard of any parents giving their kids weed but as it's legal in DC I'm sure some parents have it at home and kids find it. I have heard of a couple of parties where parents were home and alcohol was present. These were held by students from several different schools. Not sure if the parents knew or not!

How many kids were listed in the excelsheet of the GDS student-dealer?

Answer to the original question.

All schools have drugs. This is not a private vs public issue. Anyone who thinks otherwise well I have the Brooklyn Bridge to sell you.

If you are choosing between public and private I’d worry more about the academics and where is a good fit for your child.

Then make sure you have great communication with your kid and be a parent, otherwise doesn’t matter what a school drugs are coming your way.

In public you will have more the variety of edibles and weed. Private school you get more into cocaine and the high end drugs. Prescription drugs will be at both, unfortunately.

This. It is amazing how many parents stop parenting their kids at the time they need the most parenting when they are teenagers. The kids getting into trouble are the kids that allowed to just roam free without checking in with their parents. Teens should have independence but not complete autonomy.

Student-dealer? Spreadsheet? Could you be a little bit more specific

About 3 years ago a student was found to be dealing drugs to other students. He was expelled and yes, the smoking gun was an excel spreadsheet.

How many students appeared in the spreadsheet?

I'm guessing that, if he kept one to begin with, there must have been quite a number of kids involved.

Wrong. I always had autonomy and never wanted to try any drug. There was TRUST between my parents and me. The friends who were more monitored by parents were the ones who used drugs.

...which is why their parents needed to monitor them.
