And this is base off of what??? |
Say more? What are they doing specifically? |
I have to say as a parent of sidwell upper school students and a recent alum, I know there are always a handful of kids experimenting in any high school, but to come close to saying that it is a problem there would be a major over-exageration. |
It's hyperbole. I have a '19 grad and I have no idea what the "on a different level" means. |
| Honestly I just want to know if opioids Are a big issue. Pills, whatever. Terrifying. |
GDS parent here, I will be very interested in knowing any specific about drugs on the school. Haven’t heard anything from the school itself |
Whole lot of tass everywhere, lots of students rass the jass and dass, a bit of wass now and then, not too much of the more serious stuff. |
| big exaggeration to say there is a problem at sidwell. have heard of some kids using weed, but not that many in 9th and 10th. don’t know much about 11th and 12th. haven’t heard about any other drugs. |
+1 |
| Alcohol, Weed, Acid, ecstasy, aderol - not so much opioids. |
| There is a lot of cocaine around again. Kids (even “good” kids) are trying it. Obviously most kids try and some routinely smoke weed. My DD graduated from a school mentioned above last year and was surprised to find fewer hard drugs being offered in college than in the upper nw private scene. There are also a few bad parental apples who actually give it to their kids thinking at least they know where it came from. |
Coke???? |
This is the situation at GDS as well. Anyone claiming GDS has a bigger drug problem is uninformed. My kid has a fairly social group of friends and in 9th-10th no one is using hard drugs but I've heard that some kids have smoked weed. Some kids drink too. Neither seems to be that common (and I personally don't consider one worse than the other). Have never heard of any parents giving their kids weed but as it's legal in DC I'm sure some parents have it at home and kids find it. I have heard of a couple of parties where parents were home and alcohol was present. These were held by students from several different schools. Not sure if the parents knew or not! |

I have 2 high school boys, one in private and one in W school in MCPS. I basically hear the same things - lots of kids vaping, lots of kids vaping weed, definitely drinking, but I haven't personally heard of any other drugs - not saying it doesn't happen, just saying my kids haven't come across it or haven't told me.
Bottom line - there are pretty much some drugs at all schools in this area and vaping and drinking. That said, it's not every kid - it's some kids and some groups of friends. My kids are not perfect but we talk about it with both kids a lot and the comparisons don't really seem that different - maybe in the scale since the larger public school has more kids who experiment by shear numbers... |
| We have friends whose oldest child graduated from private a few years ago. That student had friends at a variety of schools in DC area because their K-8 class continued onto a mix of public/private and also through sports connections. The student had shared that drugs seemed to be present at all schools pretty much equally. It didn't matter whether it was private or public and it didn't matter which private. Some kids had pretty severe issues, others less so....but it exists everywhere and it's key to just teach your child about the dangers and how to make good choices. |
