How does Virginia Tech have such a high admissions rate?

Seems weird to care about an admissions rate.

Yes, out of the Virginia public colleges , W&M, UVA, and Tech have the highest incoming GPA’S and test scores. Yet there are other VA schools with lower stats than Tech’s but also lower admission rates. Also most schools with Tech’s stats have lower admission rates. I don’t understand this. Is it simply that kids who don’t think they will get into Tech are choosing not to apply?[u]

Yes, as several posters have said, the kids that apply to Tech are the ones that really want to go there & are pretty damn sure they can. I have had 3 nieces/nephews apply to Tech in the last 5 years, all got in & went. For all three is was the school they wanted to attend since middle school with lots of family & friends have gone there. They applied and were accepted to other schools but picked Tech.

Except their yield is only 30.4%. So they don't all want to go their. It's a big time safety school for many students.

I went to Tech (amazing school) and 10-15 years ago it was not considered a challenge to be accepted. I never worried about admission from my FCPS high school with decent stats.

I’m not sure what has changed; I have to imagine it’s self-selection like PPs said.

Years ago before GT started using the Common App, their admin rate was > 50% (I think even higher, I'd have to go back and look). Since the Common App, they've dropped significantly.

Also, VT engineering stats are higher with a lower admin rate. My kid won't look at UVA because he wants to go into engineering.

Incorrect on the VT statement. 2018 seems to be an anomaly at this point. In a few years, perhaps that will be proven wrong and 2019 will look like the anomaly. Regardless, the admission rate didn't even change all that much in 2018. Engineering is still less selective than VT overall and much less selective than UVA (39% admission rate in state and 21% out of state).

VT Admit Rate Overall (Engineering only admission rate)
2010 - 67% (74)
2011 - 67% (67)
2012 - 70% (72)
2013 - 70% (73)
2014 - 73% (73)
2015 - 73% (75)
2016 - 71% (71)
2017 - 70% (73)
2018 - 65% (68)
2019 - 70% (76)

But how does this explain how Liberty has an acceptance rate of 24% and Lynchburg 64%?

Key words “with decent stats”. How is it that colleges with kids that have less decent stats have lower admissions rates?

Ok this makes no sense to me. My nephew who graduated with a 4.5 GPA and a sat above 1500 was rejected from Tech engineering. He was accepted to UVA and Middlebury but rejected from Tech Engineering. I don’t see how that’s possible when looking at the acceptance rates from above.

How do these %s compare with the admit rates from NoVA high schools on Naviance?

How does Liberty have a 24% acceptance rate? That’s lower than UVA’s!

It’s curiosity. Plus it just doesn’t make sense. The school has vey high stats for incoming Freshmen. E erroneous knows it’s one of the hardest Virginia schools to be admitted to. Yet the admissions rate is considerably higher than schools with much lower stats.

"one of the hardest Virginia schools to be admitted to" with a 70% admission rate? Check your math. It's not hard to get into.

It's also not in demand outside of Virginia. It's actually EASIER to get in from OOS.

Ding! That's the key. Only around 24% of the 34k+ students are from OOS (including International students). That's only around 8k.

Outside of VA when kids research top engineering programs, VT doesn't even crack the top 25. I know my nephew in NM who was interested in engineering didn't have VT on his list. It was all about Michigan, Purdue, GA Tech, UC San Diego.

I know a kid who just got deferred from Tech engineering ED with a 1600 SAT, GPA 3.6 (FCPS).

Um no that’s not the key. That’s true of all public colleges in VA. The state limits how many students can be admitted from out of state. So again, how can other VA state colleges with lower stats such as CNU have lower acceptance rates?

Non-engineering admission is a pretty safe bet for students with good but not necessarily stellar grades. Engineering is much more competitive.

This. Students applying to VA in-state schools self-select or their counselors direct them to the most appropriate school.

Yes, but you still have to be a pretty good student to get accepted as a non-engineering applicant. I've known many good - not excellent but certainly respectable students who have not gotten into Tech at all, which is why I don't get how schools with lower profiles have lower acceptance rates. Also, I'll repeat a question I asked earlier. How in the heck does Liberty have a 24% acceptance rate? Are there things that colleges do to cook their numbers to make it seem like they have lower acceptance rates than they do? Is that the answer? That Tech isn't playing the same game that some of the other schools are?
