I remember one year about 20 years ago when I was in HS, they opened on time and all the HS buses started skidding all over the road and they realized there was black ice everywhere. So they called a 2-hour delay for MS and ES, just as some of the MS bus routes had started. My younger brother's bus was already halfway to school but Transportation radioed and told everyone to pull over. He ended up just sitting on the bus on the side of the road for like an hour. I just remember being bitter that he'd gotten a delay and I hadn't, even though he spent most of it on the shoulder of a side street in Rockville. |
So far only PG: Prince George's County Public Schools 2 Hour Delay Wednesd |
|
It literally only rained in Pg today. LOL |
You don’t understand black ice. Some wet roads with warm undergrounds and barely freezing temperature does not produce icy roads. This is ridiculous |
Those teachers in PG deserve this delay! |
|
There is a two hour delay! Yay!

| Does the state of Maryland not own salt trucks? Do you pre-treat the roads? I live in a state north of you, but this never ending weather talk is fascinating. |
Do you commute to our area? why the fascination with us if you're north? |
Just read another post that said they can’t really treat the roads when it starts as rain, because it’ll just wash away. |
| Reason the south never made it past Mason Dixon line it was too chilly |
This area has made the decision not to invest in the kind of infrastructure to keep things moving in the snow. It’s cheaper to shut everything down a few times a year than keep the necessary infrastructure on hand. They pave the roads with summer tarmac here, not the winterized stuff. In addition, our geographical location makes us more prone to ice events than big snow events. Lots of rain before a storm, so the salt doesn’t stick, and am refreezing. The only thing that I see down here that is truly stupid (but again may be related to capacity) is that they wait until there’s a buildup of snow to plow. Up north they stay ahead of it - when I lived in NY, the trucks would make passes in front of our house during storms and it seemed like they were often scraping the street. For a typical 6-8 inch storm, the streets - including residential streets - were good to go once the storm is over. Here, that’s when they start thinking about plowing the side streets, so your out of commission for much longer. |
| There is NOT a delay for DC, right? |
| How are roads out there? Any chance of closure? |
The website message now says MCPS will stay on a two-hour delay today. |
