This area has made the decision not to invest in the kind of infrastructure to keep things moving in the snow. It’s cheaper to shut everything down a few times a year than keep the necessary infrastructure on hand. They pave the roads with summer tarmac here, not the winterized stuff. In addition, our geographical location makes us more prone to ice events than big snow events. Lots of rain before a storm, so the salt doesn’t stick, and am refreezing.

The only thing that I see down here that is truly stupid (but again may be related to capacity) is that they wait until there’s a buildup of snow to plow. Up north they stay ahead of it - when I lived in NY, the trucks would make passes in front of our house during storms and it seemed like they were often scraping the street. For a typical 6-8 inch storm, the streets - including residential streets - were good to go once the storm is over. Here, that’s when they start thinking about plowing the side streets, so your out of commission for much longer.[/quote]
