How much to pay for someone to pick my kid up from school and take her to dance?

It is a mom job -
essential, needing sacrifice of time from a responsible person everyday and will not be paid much for it, and yet no one wants to do it for another.

To be honest, I was really envisioning it being a high schooler. I could see where a highschooler would have free time around then and want some easy money. I just don't know how reliable they would be.

Bad choice. High schoolers think very short term - like this week. Come volleyball season, or student council meeting day, or finals, or whatever, they will cancel. You need a reliable adult who will probably want $40 or more a day.

She dances five days a week.

Then she needs to get herself there via by foot or public transportation.

This has already been addressed.

Uber. I've been seeing ads about a new transportation company for kids (Zoom-something) but don't know anything about it.

OP says she lives in a semi-rural area. I doubt any of these options are going to be reliable there.

I find it hard to believe there is anyplace in DC metro that is solely accessible by one highway.

It will cost you north of $200 a week and be prepared for a rotating door of drivers. No one wants this job. If they are available at this time they are more likely to pick up a job that will go from 3-6, shuttle a couple of kids for $60/day, which is what we pay our after school nanny.

Walk, bus, Uber, bike, taxi.

You say her school has buses. Any with stops near the dance studio?

Ah, good point.

Isn’t there some sort of kid Uber?

I actually just thought about this on my way home from dropping her off at dance. Her studio is in the same school zone and there is a neighborhood right behind the studio. Assuming there is a stop there she would be able to walk to the studio without going down a busy highway. I'm not sure if schools allow kids to permanently change thei bus assignments to another stop if there not actually going to someone"s home.

I was wondering about this as well but I'm pretty sure there's not one in our area. I actually wouldn't mind her taking uber, but I know that technically here not supposed to pick up kids under 18, so they might not be willing to pick up at a middle school. Plus it would be kind of a pain to try and explain by text the pick up process to a different driver each day..

We are in a far out suburb. Some might even consider it an exurb. Her school is located on a 50 mph busy four lane highway with no sidewalks. She would have to cross the street in front of her school and there isn't even a light, cross walk, or crossing guard. The school literally has ZERO walkers. It's 100% bus riders. That should tell you something about the safety of walking along this road.

No one wants this job. Call the school and see if she can take a bus that lets out close to the studio.

I apologize if I sound snippy for saying this, but many people have asked these same questions, and if any of these were options I wouldn't be posting here. We are in a somewhat rural area (but the school and dance studio are along busy roads), that's why there are no sidewalks, no there is not a city bus around, and there is no other path for her to get there. The school doesn't even have a crossing guard because all the kids who go there are bus riders. I know this is hard to imagine, but it's the situation. I would be fine with my daughter walking there if there was a sidewalk and crossing guard, but there isn't.

Have you checked if the dance studio has any type of bulletin board? Try posting on there. You might be able to find another family that also dances in the afternoons that would be willing to be hired to pick up your child at school and take her to dance with them. Or perhaps a dancing HS student who can stop and pick up your daughter on her way to dance. Dancing that includes this much practice/rehearsal, is expensive and there may be another family or dancer who would welcome the chance to offset some of their expenses by just stopping by a school a mile away from the studio to pick up another dancer and take her to class.

Is there no school bus though that leaves in the direction of the dance school? It seems odd that no kids live a mile in that direction from the school.
