That hasn't been our experience. My child had a really positive experience at CJMS.

I find it very concerning that police were involved. That sounds like it's much more than regular middle school stupidity.

Eh. MCPS has a history of involving the police for anything that is even remotely racially offensive. (While at the same time, not involving the police when kids are reporting sexual abuse - as in the Damascus rape case).

I wouldn’t read too much into the fact that police were called.

+1 MCPS principals have to call in police to let them determine if there was a crime committed. I think we all agree police should have been called sooner in Damascus.

Since 13 year-olds can get social media accounts and many lie and say they are 13 and get them younger, I don't know that any parent can be absolutely certain their child doesn't have a secret account. Since MCPS requires work on a computer at home, the kids can get onto social media even if they don't have phones. Since my child frequently has to walk home from school alone, I want her to have a smartphone so I can see where she is and when she gets home. Parents can control the apps on the phone, though.

In 7th grade?

I have a 7th grader at a different MS and she’s not on social media.

I spend a ton of time driving her and her friends all over and they rarely talk about social media stuff.

I know by HS this will change, but I don’t think every 12/13 year old is on Instagram.

They aren't - in 7th - by the end of 8th, social media is their stock and trade.

You can set their chromebook up with a family account, and not allow guest sign-on, and limit what they can/cannot view. This way, even if they have a secret account, they can't log on, at least from the configured chromebook.

Do you have information of what happened? It seems from the principal's note that these weren't mean words, but an actual threat deemed credible enough to involve the police.
