It's very hard to monitor. Your child has AT LEAST one or two accounts that you don't know about. I promise you. The best thing is to not give your child a smartphone.

I have a high schooler and in 7th grade he did not have a phone, and was not on social media. Actually, even now, he isn't on social media.

Please don't generalize, PP, it makes you look stupid.

You don't need a phone to have social media. You just need access to the internet.

No, I'm OP and my kid is in 7th grade. He's very active online and hasn't heard of anything.

I find it very concerning that police were involved. That sounds like it's much more than regular middle school stupidity.

Eh. MCPS has a history of involving the police for anything that is even remotely racially offensive. (While at the same time, not involving the police when kids are reporting sexual abuse - as in the Damascus rape case).

I wouldn’t read too much into the fact that police were called.

Could you back up your statement that MCPS has a history of involving police for anything that is even remotely racially offensive?

I think police involvement has to do with the threat. Not necessarily the racism.

Wow, that's rude. DP here but my kids and just about all of her friends were on social media, including Instagram at that age. From my perspective, that is more the norm.

This. It's the threat. They discussed the process for handling threats at one of the BOE meetings last year. The reason police are promptly involved is that they can get electronic records from internet service providers and social media platforms to track down the student and home (ip) the threat was made from. They visit the home, notify parents, and determine if there are any actual weapons or means for the student to carry out the threat. Further actions/consequences for the student depend on if it was a prank, mental health concern, or actual behavioral concern.

I was pretty impressed with the details and how interconnected several agencies are to handle this type of problem.

In 7th grade?

I have a 7th grader at a different MS and she’s not on social media.

I spend a ton of time driving her and her friends all over and they rarely talk about social media stuff.

I know by HS this will change, but I don’t think every 12/13 year old is on Instagram.

You so funny. Tic Toc whole school is on

OP here. I hope the target(s) are doing ok and have a lot of support. It is all so sad.

I’m not the PP, but that PP wasn’t being rude at all. What about her post feels rude?

She was just pointing out that not all kids are on social media in MS. And that PP’s generalizations are incorrect.

Maybe at Cabin John. Not at our low-rent, non W Middle School.

She called the PP stupid. I’d call that rude. And a generalization is a generalization, not a universal truth. Just because someone’s child is not on social media does not make a generalization untrue. It’s makes the name caller’s child an outlier.

It sounds like at least one person on this thread is in the know. Can you say whether the violence was targeted at specific kids or more generally?

You do realize that if this happened at a non W school, those W parents would be on here claiming how those schools are gang infested, and they are so glad their kids go to a W school.

But here, we have a situation where it happened at a W schools, and it's "oh.. stupid things teens do". LOL

Here's the point, parents. Err on the side of assuming your child has social media accounts you don't know about.

This is not unlike "my child doesn't drink; my child is not sexually active." How many friends did you have growing up whose parents thought they didn't do those things...and you knew they did? Right, exactly.
