Yuppie sister in law finally ends ice cream, chewing gum & candy restrictions placed on her children

Anonymous
Why do you care what she feeds her kids, anyway? I care zero about what any of my sisters/SILs feed their kids.

I’ve never been that restrictive but of course kids can have things in elementary school that you might not have fed them as toddlers. I let my 10yo have an occasional soda, for example, but it was out of the questions when he was 3!

You sound like you have too much time on your hands, and are jealous of your SIL. IMHO.

OP, you are SO much better than your sister in law. Pat yourself on the back.

I took my niece out for her 5th birthday last week and my brother and SIL determined ahead of time what her order would be to ensure it met the diet.

It is exhausting. It means I do a lot less with those nieces and nephews than my other ones where I am not always anxious about messing up.

Ok this is different. Unless a Dr put these kids on keto for intractable seizures- kids should not be on keto.
This is unhealthy mentally and physically for these kids.

The SIL of OP probably just wants to limit refined sugar but likely allows them to eat whole grains and fruit.

Wow- did the kids have a weight problem? Or why Keto? Just curious- DH and I are Keto but our kids certainly are not! I don’t think the diet would be healthy for a growing child unless there was a medical reason...

Yeah it 100% is not healthy for growing kids. The only time it is indicated is for seizures in certain situations and then you have to be very on top of getting those nutrients in other ways.

They walk to school and there is a convenience store right across the street from the school.

I tried to tell her this 5 years ago but she would not listen to me.

You have too much time on your hands.

The Great Corn-trollio has made an appearance!
No way this is real. I believed the original post but not the follow up about the exhausting fight.

This has been a nearly 6 year battle that has finally come to an end.

Yes I won and I should be celebrating but this entire ordeal has been exhausting to say the least.

Why do so many people here think they’re actually witty or even just funny? You’re tiresome and dumb.

Why would you fight how someone else is raising their children?

+1

Very tiresome. And very dumb.

You didn’t win. Her children are older so they have different rules.

It’s like the “cool mom” who hosted drinking parties for high schoolers saying she “won” because all the other parents let their college graduates drink at their barbecues. Umm no. You don’t understand how parenting works. At all.

Setting aside the dated term, how young can a parent of multiple kids, who is apparently also a career woman so probably went to grad school and worked for a few years before starting to have kids, really be? And having been a yuppie back in the day there really weren't any particular child rearing philosophies attached to that. it had more to do with your job/career aspirations and where you lived.

No they are quite thin and no medical issues. They do it for health and weight maintenance. My niece told me while out at lunch that bread makes you fat. My brother became a bit fanatical about the keto diet and his wife came on board (although she is not as committed). Since they were eating that way, they also had the kids start eating that way. They are anti-carbs / sugar. The kids are allowed 15g of sugar a day max - I am not sure if that is keto or not. No breads or pastas or rice or any grains. They eat a lot of meat and eggs and nuts. They do eat a bit of fruit and they eat veggies - some more than others. My SIL and the kids do cheat (my brother doesn't) but when it is something public, they really reinforce all their rules about eating.

What a terrible battle this must have been for poor you! Maybe you can finally take a vacation! Surely it is much deserved?

My father still won't let me have gum at home. I'm 38.

Ha, gotta laugh! In public they reinforce the keto rules for kids under ten! That's what I call attention "*hores! But, they cheat otherwise. Those poor kids, they will gain so much weight once in college. I know a teen girl who was on some insane diet(but parents were not on board, got her an eating therapist and all for fix this) and after one year in college this stick girl gained so much weight, like an absurd amount of weight! Eating carbs will do that to you cause they taste good, so good. I myself have wheat allergy, so can't imagine anyone giving it up just for no good reason!
