Yuppie sister in law finally ends ice cream, chewing gum & candy restrictions placed on her children

Thank goodness you aren’t my SIL. I raise my kids. If anyone tried to “battle” me over how I do so, I would make sure we saw that person as infrequently as possible.

You overstepped. You are lucky she didn’t cut you off.

They walk to school and there is a convenience store right across the street from the school.

I tried to tell her this 5 years ago but she would not listen to me.
. It’s a good idea for the first years.

At some point your kids will have an allowance and some freedom to spend their money unsupervised but hopefully if you've raised them with reasonable limits on their consumption of treats they will make smart choices and self regulate themselves and not end up being blimps.

If it makes me a yuppie to be concerned about my kids health then please lump me in with your sister who sounds a lot smarter than you.

dp What's wrong with gum? Especially if you don't get the sugary kind?

If I told my husband that our kids could never eat ice cream and such, he'd let me know it wasn't going to go down like that--and he's a very mild-mannered type who usually goes with whatever I want.

Sorry your brother is such a spineless, uninvolved dad. Wow, sorry you come from weak stock, apparently.

+1. Why isn't your brother, like...a dad?

What if I were to tell you that my SIL is raising her kids- which are my brother's kids...
AS VEGETARIANS???
Imagine that OP...living without bacon!! Of course I have to battle her!!!

Regarding gum your SIL is smart b.c it is a choking hazard.

My brother and SIL and their 3 kids (all under 10) are all on the keto diet. I also find the restrictions frustrating. Their kids always have to count carb grams to see what sugars and simple carbs are in the food.

I took my niece out for her 5th birthday last week and my brother and SIL determined ahead of time what her order would be to ensure it met the diet.

It is exhausting. It means I do a lot less with those nieces and nephews than my other ones where I am not always anxious about messing up.

There are still yuppies having kids? Aren’t the yuppies in their 60s?

+1. My SIL and I have very different ideas on food and scree time and bedtime and yet we don’t “battle” over it.

I'm the pp with the gum question. Of course, you don't give someone under 5 gum but, you think a 10 year old can't handle gum? I've choked on gumballs and swallowed gum but, never choked.

This has been a nearly 6 year battle that has finally come to an end.

Yes I won and I should be celebrating but this entire ordeal has been exhausting to say the least.

Woah, six years of being able to mind your business and not give a flip about how your sister feeds her kids. Exhausting indeed. Whew.

There are crazy people in this world, and I’m not talking about the sister in law.

Ok this is different. Unless a Dr put these kids on keto for intractable seizures- kids should not be on keto.
This is unhealthy mentally and physically for these kids.

The SIL of OP probably just wants to limit refined sugar but likely allows them to eat whole grains and fruit.

She seems eminently reasonable.

You, not so much.
