Virginia Tech gets 1,000 more freshman than last year

I feel bad for the Tech engineering kids who stand even less of a chance of lasting until second year.

If you’re talking about Purdue, no, they did a terrible job. These kids were rejected in January and now miraculously admitted. That means their projections were waaaay off, and their waitlist was to short. How embarrassing for the school.

Like turning down that potential prom date then reconsidering a week later because the class president/quarterback didn't ask.

Our daughter goes to tack and I seem to recall them saying they had a few more thousand applicants this year than last but the number was not super significant. It didn’t seem like there were that many fewer applications for last year.

They had a record number of applicants last year but they accepted fewer applicants because they had over admitted the year before.

This year may have been another record breaker for applicants and possibly a greater percentage of the applicants being offered admission are accepting their offers.

It's already out that they had fewer applications this year than last.

The universities on the same metro line as Amazon are Maryland and Howard

Don't think VT is in the equation here

Last year was a particularly competitive year because they had over admitted the year before. I don't know about this year.

We accepted 1,600 more freshman than we can house in normal room spaces. Typically, an overflow results in us putting people in temporary spaces, but 5-person lounges and adding an extra person to single rooms isn't enough to correct for such a large overflow. Admissions uses trends to estimate how many people will actually accept their offer, and typically aims for around 2% growth in enrollment each year. This year they really messed up. So here we are. Some of you may be wondering how it is living in a lounge with 5 people, and the answer is it sucks and your housing should be discounted more than it is, but whatever.

UVA is also over enrolled, and they’re not going to the waitlist either.

Wow!

I would hate that. There sent housing for that many!

They are now allowing freshman students to live off campus.

I don't have a kid at or heading to VT so this is just out of interest: What is the rental housing stock like in Blacksburg? Is this larger freshman class going to swamp the dorms the spill over and swamp the rental housing market in the area?

I always wonder this about universities where there is a large proportion of students who must find off-campus housing. My DH (at another college and yeah, years ago) ended up in some really awful, as in actually unsafe/never maintained/overcrowded rentals because the rental market for broke students like him was so tight. So is a larger influx of students going to be a problem in the Blacksburg area?

Students at VT scramble to find off campus housing starting in Oct their freshman year. It's ridiculous to think there will be housing available for all these extra incoming freshman.

They've got to get their house in order or it's going to impact their reputation.

When I was at JMU in the early 90s, they put up students in a Howard Johnson's near campus.

This really is upsetting to me (PP from earlier in thread with kids who will be applying next year.)

1. Almost every school that we’ve considered (certainly all of the state schools) have both required and guaranteed housing for freshman. My kids see that as a good thing. They definitely want to live on campus freshman year, and at least at this point were planning on at least sophomore year on campus as well. That Tech can no longer offer that is deeply frustrating. My kids have earned the test scores and grades and taken on the challenging coursework and extracurriculars to be good candidates for Tech. Now this school won’t be able to offer what is generally considered a expected feature: guaranteed housing for freshman. Will my students have to enroll at a slightly less competitive school, in order to get housing. It’s frustrating that these are the kinds of choices folks will be facing due to incredibly poor planning by Tech.

2. They will no doubt have to make the admissions next year even more competitive, to make up for the huge screw up this year. This major correction will mean the class of 2020 will have a ridiculously high hurdle to scale.

Grrr.

The off-campus housing scramble happens at most universities for upperclassmen, its almost a rite of passage - but it will be easier to find housing in Blacksburg then a big city.

Chillax everyone.

On another note, it looks like applicants were put off by the Coalition app or perhaps the short answer essay questions for VT.

They are aiming to diversify their student body, and they are succeeding. They claim their stats are the second highest ever, so interestingly, it hasn’t sent test scores and GPAs tumbling. On thé one hand, diversifying is really securing their future. Good move. On the other, it still has elements of a weed out school in engineering and science. Lots of area housing though. Should turn out ok. Hope they hire enough faculty to have reasonable course offerings for intro classes.

I'm not understand the comparison in schools. Some are private and some are public. As costs go up, people are going to look more toward public as only the very rich and very poor who can get aid can afford them now.

I could have predicted it. In my DD's highly ranked FCPS high school, almost all the kids who got into VT decided to go there. A lot of the kids got into higher ranked schools but chose VT. It seems like half of DD's friends are going to VT.

Does anyone have a link about Purdue accepting rejected students? Haven't heard about this till this thread.
