Teacher appreciation week and how much to give

They get paid. I pay property tax. Give them nothing else!
????? Seriously?

We are at a daycare downtown where both parents are professionals (many two lawyer families) and it is pulling teeth every time we collect money for teacher gifts. Granted at Christmas, we asked for a substantial amount, but on other occasions (TAW, teacher birthdays) it's $5-$15. The teachers do so much, including getting gifts for our children on holidays/birthdays, and are paid so little, yet people still feel no inclination to give. Just venting, but it's nice to see that some other centers have more generous parents!

Wow that sucks! I would call out the parents and have a spreadsheet LOL. Like ask each family for a reasonable amount $20-40 and send out updates on who paid. Seriously teachers deserve TAW!

Private preschool teacher here. My school serves well-off families, and the room parent collects from the other families and provides a pooled cash or gift card gift. For families with money, they really should pay up, since preschool/ child care teachers don't make much. If the families don't have much money, then contributing $5 is fine. A drawn picture by a child / a note of appreciation from the parent is always a nice thing to receive.

I think that cash is great, or a gift card usable in a variety of places (Amazon, or a visa gift card). The room parent often also gets a small gift (such as a coffee mug, chocolate, a plant, hand lotion) to go along with the bigger cash gift, which is a nice touch. I often get about $300 as a holiday gift pooled from the families, which is quite generous! I get a comparable cash gift at the end of the school year too.

How much does everyone give / or would you give in this scenario at my daughter's preschool:

1 head teacher
1 assistant teacher

4-5 after school teachers

For Christmas I gave $50 to both teachers and $25 to the after school but I'm not sure if this is average.

I was thinking about doing $25-40 for the teachers and $20 for after school since money is a little tighter, but not sure if that is too low! I'm also contributing food and other items for the week activities.

Thanks in advance!

Last year I did $25 each for 6 teachers/director at the daycare/preschool. This year I’m doing $50 each. They came in to work every day after preschool reopened. They didn’t organize and protest that the kids made it too risky for them (compare it with some teachers in public school systems where the teacher association pressured the superintendent to not reopen. My older child, 7 years old, has been on virtual learning/distance learning since March). The preschool teachers had to deal with little kids not wearing masks properly, making little kids wash hands extra often, all the added risks of covid exposure since they had to show up in person every day. I’d do $100 each if our budget allowed.

I came here to see if it was normal. I just got a list of items requested for each day of the week from our small daycare. I'm honestly a little floored by the requests for giftcards and food and buying them lunch and other very specific things for each day of the week. We barely afford the $400 a week to have them watch our 10 month old, and now i feel like i've been given two weeks notice to pay up or else. I generally like doing small baskets/gifts for people and teachers in my family, but this demanding list of favorites and requests from two people i pay on time, every week, whether my kid is there or not, just feels gross to me. I've never heard of a full week either. A day, yes, but a full week and demands is just nuts to me.

My room parent asked me to fill out a questionnaire about things I like-so I did. It was by no means a list of demands from me to the parents. Perhaps someone at the school asked teachers to fill out a form? If you don't want to participate in gift giving, just send a nice thank you note. Teachers of all people certainly understand that budgets get tight sometimes...

Wait each person is expected or it is distributed through the daycare kids? For example, we have a small church preschool education center (yes accredited) and there is a signup. Im actually a little annoyed at how few have signed up. I budgeted 75 for this week and 100 for EOY teachers and 50 EOY summers and 100 for Christmas last year. I also signed up to work a shift for something that week.

Do what you can but this should not be a surprise. Its appreciation week, Xmas, and End of Year. 325 for a whole year. And I know I am on the high end. Maybe parents do other stuff independently but I try to give when its centralized and distributed amongst the whole staff.
