This is me. 6 weeks vacation. There’s also sick leave, accrued separately. This is a job where you are “on” all the time, so there’s no expectation to take an hour of leave here and there for a doctor/dentist appt. So I only use vacation leave for actual vacation, and sick leave for when I’m home with my younger child and can’t get work done. I’ve also worked at a small law firm with “unlimited” leave. You get screwed bc you can’t accrue anything for when you leave. There’s a separate parental leave policy with paid leave. |

4.25 Hours per pay period I get paid twice a month. 8.5 hours a month or 102 hours a year. I might try 8-24 hours this year.

OP - if your husband has 6 weeks he needs to cover kid sick days and Dr appts. You need to put your kids in camps for spring break and 1 of 2 Christmas weeks. You can do a 1 week vacation over 4th of July to use only 3-4 days and same at Christmas. That will leave 1-3 days to use for a family wedding or long weekend. You need to stay put in your next job for 3-5 years and accumulate some leave. |

6 weeks consulting - sick leave is included within the 6. I don't think I always use it - I usually work a little on vacation unless I'm somewhere like Europe where I really am intent on being unplugged, so don't need/(get) to take the full week off, but have more than enough time.
DH gets a lot less, but sometimes won't actually take off that much depending on what kind of trip it is - he'll just work where we are at least 50%, sometimes more. He can WFH whenever needed, so in practice its been fine even though he gets a lot less. |
Depends on if that is PTO or just Vacation. The title asked about vacation days. So if people are getting sick on top of that as a new hire, then it’s not that unusual. |

I’m a Fed at an independent agency. 7 years of service.
20 days annual leave. I can roll over 360 hours per year. 2 floating holidays (use or lose) 15 sick days (unlimited roll over) 10 Federal holidays I am on an AWS schedule. So I get every-other Friday off (another 26 days of potential leave but no way to bank it/roll over) Best schedule I’ve ever had. |
| Brother is a radiologist. Gets 12 weeks vacation and only works 4 days a week. Makes bank too. Sheesh! |
| I'm an attorney at a small law firm with unlimited PTO. There are some parameters about needing permission to take off for more than 3 weeks consecutively, etc., but otherwise, it's great. That said, as an attorney, you're tied to the billable hour clock, so when you're truly on vacation and not working, you're also not earning money. It's a double-edged sword. |

Have had it in the past. The policy for unlimited PTO was very clear that it was not applicable to parental leave or any other leave of absence. It was only meant for short periods of time off (e.g. being out for a week with the flu or 2-weeks at the beach). |

I know that people who have to move around a lot do miss out on vaca days. It's especially true with the federal government. It doesn't matter if you're a securities expert with 15 years coming from Biglaw, they will start you will very few vaca days. The feds (and some other old-school employers) really make you put in the time before you get vaca days.
I was in a situation like you when I switched in-house legal positions 5 years ago. I was accustomed to having 4 weeks of vaca, and the new employer was offering the standard 2 weeks of vaca. I was able to negotiate 4 weeks before I accepted the job. I noticed that other people (with a similar level of experience) at my company who started at the same time were getting by with 2 weeks of vaca for many years, because they either did not attempt to negotiate, or were unsuccessful in negotiating that. I was like you -- with 2 weeks of vaca, I was not going to take the job (since I have 2 kids). DH (was already getting 5 weeks of vaca) at his job. |
