Mcps is over half underperformers at 1-3 grade levels below where they should be at. They are solely focused on these bottom half of students - esol, farms, under performers- and closing the achievement gap from both sides. They cut the magne t program admits to make a large section for diversity and highly able URMs.

Still butt-hurts your kid didn't make it.

Classy, are you here repping mcps? thats all I’d need to know to decide.

There are some parents who are obsessed with magnet admissions in MCPS. The older system relied on parent recommendations and many didn't even know about magnets so the competition wasn't that high but to raise URM participation the county started universal screening a couple of years ago which made it harder for parents who were used to just signing up their kids to get in the program. Many are very bitter about it.

BUT mcps also introduced anti-asian discrimination for magnet and advanced program placement so if you are asian fcps is a much better choice that wont hold your kids back because of their skin color or ethnicity.

Yes all it took was signing your kid up before! The 3 hour test result was just a formality. The kids that got rejected or waitlisted but have parents that did not fill out the whole form!

Actually, that's not exactly the case. With universal screening the county is testing 10X the number of kids than before and Asians just make up a lower percentage of the applicant pool than was previously true.

FCPS' AAP seems less rigorous than similar offerings in MCPS, but the later has more competitive admissions.

DP.. you know you're being dishonest here. MCPS also implemented the "cohort criteria" which ended up excluding many of the Asian American students on the western side of the county, where many of the students in priors years into magnets came from. If MCPS had implemented universal screening (which is great) without the peer cohort criteria, the numbers wouldn't have changed all that much. Peer cohort was a way to implement "race norming".

+1 MCPS is better if your child is in the top 1% of his/her class. FCPS is better if your child is in the top 20% of their class.

It's the same everywhere. Mostly tied to federal funds.

Isn't FCPS AAP just segregation?

DP... yea, if you read the VA school forum you see people posting about behavioral issues and teachers' hands being tied.
