Why are the overwhelming number of non-binary people biologically female?

I teach ND. This is my experience as well. My DD has gotten zero flak for being a lesbian, and her trans boy classmate no longer raises eyebrows but her gay male friends are bullied regularly.

At least some AFAB non-binary people are attracted to cis males, so no.

I think that a lot of thinking you're male may be about wanting to experience male privilege on some level. What's sad is the idea that boys think you have to "be a girl" to experiment with hair, makeup, clothes, and women may think you have to 'be a boy' in order to experience being powerful, successful and respected. What needs to change isn't your gender but these ridiculous gender norms.

I suspect this is a big part of it. Rejecting that notion that you should be "pretty" and "dainty" and therefore, in some minds, less capable.

But why would so many of them want to look masculine?

Looking masculine in our society = short hair (often), no makeup, pants and non-form fitting clothes, comfortable shoes.

See what I mean? It’s a lot easier to look butch than it is to dress to impress men in a societally proscribed way. And when you get tired of dealing with men, you may no longer fell like shaving your legs and wearing heels.

How is it less comfortable or harder to put on a pair of jeans and a women's button down shirt than it is to put on...a different pair of jeans and a man's button-down shirt? Serious question.

I get not wanting to wear dresses or skirts or heels for various reasons. But why and how is it harder to wear women's casual clothing or athletic wear than it is to wear men's clothing. Honestly asking. Same for comfortable shoes--women's wear includes flats, athletic shoes, loafers...

Short hair, sure, I see why that's easier.

The "non-binary" girls are the same girls who would have been non-binary 30 years ago, except they weren't because it wasn't a fad then, let alone something anyone even contemplated could exist. They're just girls seeking some kind of alternative identity and "rebelling" against the system. They will all become conventional CIS women in a few years.

So it's easier to just signal "non-conform" than to want to conform but not feel you are able to measure up.

I agree- I think it is an opt-out for many.

Saturday Night Live did the "Hi, I'm Pat" skit for years.... haven't watched the show in a long time but my guess is they've dropped the Pat routine because it would be so politically incorrect now.

Pat was clearly non-binary.

When you read articles about gender fluidity or non-binarism, you will see an equal number of examples of biological males to females. But in the real world this just isn't the case. I discussed this with a friend who is a lesbian who has a theory about this, but I'm curious as to what others think the reason is.

Girls tend to me more fad-oriented and gullible than boys.

Wow. Way to completely insult girls in a very deep way AND make the male experience reductive. Well-done. My hat is off to this cutting and insightful comment.

Women's fashion changes every season. A man can put on a suit, or any clothes actually, that he bought 5 years ago and it will not look out of fashion.

Yup.

But if facts don't fit into your ideology of choice...

If you can't buy an item of clothing--be it a dress or a pantsuit--and wear it well for 5 years, you honestly don't know how (or where) to shop.

My apologies if the language offended you. I should have said that girls tend to be more socially-aware and emotionally-bonding than boys.

This.

Lots of non-binary behavior going on with girls and guys when in was in college 30 years ago; the difference? No one discussed it at length, and especially not with parents, and social media did not exist.
