In one case here they also were in receipt of benefits in DC, no way registrar would know. Look at the uproar on here about Ellington criticizing the investigation, sometimes you can't win for trying. A registrar is not a police officer they can only accept what is provided but not their job to also be detectives, if it passes the sniff test they have to take it. |
I meant double dipping in the sense that is was the same father for two families! At least he works so can garnish his check! |
| So my question- will and how will this be publicized to scare off other cheaters? |
How so DMV doesn't know where people live, they just determine that in order to get DC tags you need such and such docs...same as DC public schools. Plenty of fraudsters driving around on DC streets with DC tags! |
Well, for starters a reporter from Channel 4 was tweeting it out, so I assume it will be on the local news. |
I seem to remember a couple of posters up at metro stop shelters within the last year. |
Now in Washington Post, at least online addition...but doubt will stop majority of folks as it seems chances of getting caught are pretty slim. They need more staff! |
+1 And in some cases, people's living situation may be fluid. Living in grandma's house in DC for a few months, then back to a place in MD. |
No one cares if you cheat on your DMV tags. That's just more $$ for DC. School tuition, however COSTS DC money. |
There is signage about residency fraud being illegal in most Metro stations (particularly those on or near the DC/MD border), on buses and every school is supposed to post something too. |
PP here. TBH I think this would be more effective than articles in the WaPo etc.--not sure the cheaters are all reading the WaPo cover to cover. Seems there should especially be signs in schools, and perhaps residency fraud could also be mentioned by principal at beginning of school year, and/or mentioned on school websites. But not sure they'll require or encourage that. |

The forms you literally sign to enroll make you state that this is all truthful, that this is your residence, and that there are penalties for false claims.

Yes, go Racine! I’m glad I voted for him. |
Innocent until proven guilty is a foreign concept to you? |
I haven't gotten to the end yet but a lot of families have family members that live in DC. I know someone that lives in MD but her parents live in DC. She uses their address for her son's school. IMO, coming from a school system outside of DC, it was much harder to prove residency there. We could only use a utility bill in our names or a signed lease/mortgage. In DC you can use a DC license and a car registration. That absolutely does not prove you live in a household in DC. |
