Does dcps close for state funerals?

Who’s decision would this be?

It must be the Mayor’s, and I simply don’t see this mayor shutting the schools down for any reason outside a federal holiday. Just look at the last four years of open schools on snow days.

LIVID? Because the needs of many outweigh the needs of a few? Gotcha..,

The needs of the many to do what? I really doubt there will be much disruption to the city due to the funeral. Feds holiday aside. I lived here for Reagan and Ford’s deaths and you know—I went on about my business just like every other day. I’m trying to think of what school might have traffic issues, but I can’t come up with any. Brent and Peabody are close to the Capitol, but they’re far enough it shouldn’t be a problem.

So yes, I hope my kids’ learning won’t be interrupted during one of the few full weeks of school in Nov/Dec/Jan.

The only school I can think of that could be really impacted is John Eaton (and of course the Cathedral schools themselves) as high security events st the National Cathedral sometimes close Woodley, Lowell and 34th sts.

Yes - DCPS/DME will make a recommendation and the mayor decides.

Show some respect. One-term is irrelevant and you know it. Sorry about your snowflakes. Teach them some history and how to respect the dead.

Also NP.

Whether Bush was president for 4 years or 8 years doesn't determine whether he is worthy of a state funeral or respect. GWHB was president and a state funeral is warranted.

Now whether school in DC will or must or should close just because the federal government is closed is a whole different matter.

State funeral fine but leave our schools alone. It does not cause that much disruption....except maybe the cathedral schools but they can just cancel. DCPS - no way. Eaton isn't that close. Yikes.

The NYSE and NASDAQ are closing. The federal government is closed. I think we just need to wait until Monday to see how this rolls out.

It just doesn’ t make any sense to close schools. Kids are more likely to learn something about GHWB and the presidency at schools and participate in some show of respect for the government at school than at home playing video games.

If they close, wouldn’t that wrap us into the week of June 16 for the last day of school then? I realize a single snow day would do that too, but I was hoping since they built in none this year we’d just not have any!

If NO ONE CARES then why are we having a state funeral?

God you sound miserable. And it's so evident this is about you not wanting to deal with your kids for a day. Just don't take out your LIVID state on your poor kids.

Or maybe she wants her kids’ routines and education to continue.

Oh please. They can ride it out for one day. She showed her true colors when she dissed a man who is part of history and indicated that she would be "LIVID" about closures. Guess what, NO ONE CARES that she'll be "LIVID." If she cares so much about her kids' education then she can teach them about George Bush's role in ending the Cold War. She is her kids first teacher after all.

Nah, people don’t get LIVID about that. They get LIVID when they have to change their routine/meeting schedule/lunch plans.

Yup. She's not worried about her kids' routine. She's LIVID that she has to change her routine for one day.

Ha! DCPS spends much more time on Marion Barry hagiography (and a full year on DC “history”) than teaching about President GHW Bush and his times.
