1) it's inside
2) it's a dark colored dress
3) it looks like some sort of a cocktail affair, judging by the high tables to the side in the photo

This dress is completely appropriate for an indoor cocktail event regardless of the season. Now Meghan's dress? Not entirely appropriate for an outdoor daytime event in the middle of fall. But it seems to be the only style she knows how to wear.

Why?

The dress is navy blue and white.

It's white with navy. And I guess Camilla didn't get the memo either since she's in all white?

Kate's Duggar style dress is expensive!

As covered in this post, Kate’s dress is an Alessandra Richards piece. Made in a silk crêpe de chine, it features a pleated skirt, contrasting spread collar, and contrasting cuffs. It was carried at Net-a-Porter ($1413) and also at Moda Operandi ($2400).

I actually like her dress better than Meghan's. The bare arms are distracting (to me) whereas the blue blends more with William's outfit.

Agree. When I first looked at the picture I noticed Kate's face, and the dress just blends in, which is appropriate for a family photo.

No, I still say Michelle's choices are totally fine, because they are all for evening affairs. This is a day-time, autumn, FAMILY PHOTO FOR AFIL'S 70TH BIRTHDAY. This occasion calls for conservative wardrobe choices.

Picture what it would like if both Kate and Meghan were wearing navy blue dresses. I think that putting Meghan in navy would have been w-a-y too much blue. The portrait needed a splash of lighter contrast (Meghan's dress).

The Royal family portraits are all like this. There is always a splash of color here, some contrast there.....

Every outfit in that picture was selected to make this portrait work.

NP. I truly pray you get the job you so desperately already believe in you have--sartorial adviser to the Duchess of Sussex--because obviously she hasn't got one single knowledgeable person advising her on clothes. I'm sure there isn't any social secretary, lady in waiting, dresser, tailor, milliner, personal buyer, relative by marriage, ANYONE who advises her except a troll who lives under Tower Bridge and is not au fait with the protocol for FAMILY PHOTO FOR FIL'S 70TH BIRTHDAY.

I agree. I do not think that Meghan's dress "fits" with the color scheme and classic feel of the rest of the family/the photo.

Meghan's dress is the same color as Camilla's...

I refuse to participate in this thread if it’s a VERSUS.
Kate v Meghan
Meghan v Michelle
Camille v Kate
William v Harry

It’s a lovely photo.

Charles has 5 lovely heirs and one on the way at age 70. He’s the leading descendent of the Kings and queens of England. That’s pretty cool.
