New math pathway

Is the IM something new or just a new name of something in the old system?

Do kids in different school have same standards to get in or different so that they can fill a size of a class?

IM is not new. Applied IM is new as of this year. Each year, the current math teacher will recommend the math placement for the following year.

Nope. There will be no gateway.

Any non-CES 4th grader on the path right now? they just go to 5th grade class? How about 5th grader then-going to Middle school?

No, there are 4/5 math classes in all elementary schools in MCPS. In 4th grade they take 4/5 math. In 5th grade they take 5/6 math.

Many years ago they used to bus some kids to middle schools but no longer.

Not sure if you are in the same CES with me... We had a meeting with school principal this morning, indicating a faster accelerated pathway to skip the entire Gr4, and directly into Gr5/6 in the MP2 (next Monday). In this pathway, kids can finish Pre-Calculus in Gr9. We were told this is the first year that MCPS tries on this pathway for the most advanced ES math students, so everything about logistics and teacher resources are very uncertain...

This sounds like what my grade 4 DS was just invited to join. He takes 5/6 math this year, and then Algebra 1 at our home middle school next year. Just wondering if anyone has additional information about transportation for the middle school class? We had just a few hours to decide whether to commmit to the program, and the principal wasn’t able to confirm all of the details before we had to make a decision. He thinks that we’re responsible for dropping DS at the middle school in the morning, but that MCPS will provide transportation back to the elementary school after math class is over. Does anyone know whether this is correct?

How is it possible that a 4th grader takes 5/6 math? Is it a special pull-out program? In order to take 5/6 math in 4th grade, a child has to take compacted math in 3rd grade, and I don't think MCPS allows that.. unless it's some kind of a special magnet program I am not aware of.
Interesting.

He can take your neighborhood middle school bus in the am and then they will bus him to the es afterwards. That is what is usually done.

If they were in the regular math track, then they would do math 6, then IM in 7th grade, then algebra 1 in 8th grade (for high school credit). The old version had math 6, math 7, then math 8, and algebra 1 would be done in 9th grade. See page 19 of this PDF from Lee MS: https://www.montgomeryschoolsmd.org/uploadedFiles/schools/leems/news/5th%20Grade%20Parent%20Meeting.pptx.pdf

Lee MS has a different path now, according to the presentation given to rising 6th graders this year. That PPT is from January 2017, before the IM and Applied IM class placement was enforced. Now, the basic path for students who took regular math 5 is math 6, IM 7, Algebra I, then geometry in 9th. Compacted math 5/6 students will start IM 6, then Algebra I, then Geometry, then Algebra II in 9th (although that is sometimes replaced with pre-calculus or functions, as in the Blair SMAC magnet). Some advanced 6th graders were allowed to start in Algebra I with the 7th graders, but now they have the magnet-level math and that is generally not being allowed anymore (except at Eastern where they have no magnet-level math class and they start all advanced 6th graders in Algebra I).

Not PP, but my DC is currently in the "Applied IM" class. Same as the old IM class.

Interesting that Eastern (the humanities magnet) maybe offering more math acceleration then anyplace else.

Is anybody willing to post which elementary schools are offering their most advanced students the option to take Compacted Math 5/6 in 4th grade.

One of my kids is in 8th grade (so was not allowed to be advanced two years in math), and my youngest is in third, so might be able to take advantage of this.

I was trying to figure out how the magnet programs are dealing with this years 9th graders going into pre-calc in 9th when they haven't had algebra II yet. I guess this new pathway is how they are dealing with it?

Magnet pre-calc is a misleading name. It is a 3 semester class combined Algebra II and pre-calc. Many of the kids have traditionally not had Algebra II.

Thank you for this explanation! It makes much more sense.

My DS is going to 6th grade next year and we've been told that the teacher makes the recommendation between Math 6 or IM but it's the County that makes the decision about who gets into Advanced IM (AIM) based on scores. We're supposed to get a letter soon telling us the recommendation.
