A better warning would be an email to all the parents letting them know about the page and suggesting they all do a coordinated surprise check of their kids smart phones and social media tonight

This is bad advice. 75 percent of the parents won’t do anything about it and, like it or not, your warning will impact your child negatively. Contact Instagram and the school. Stat.

This is why mine dont do instragrams, the facebook, or twitter. I am the parent, I pay the bills, I allow or disallow the Apps.

I've hammered it over and over. People just eventually get themselves in trouble on social media. Its a sure thing, eventually. Aint worth it.

Also, you cant be cyberbullied if nobody can cyber contact you. Think about that. Also you cant inadvertently anger someone.

I dont use this stuff, and dont allow my kids to. When they get to be 18 and pay the bills, they can I guess. But maybe by then I will have been vindicated and they will stay clear.

Of course you can be cyberbullied even if you aren't on social media. If everyone in school is posting mean stuff about your kid on Instagram and talking about it in school, do you think your kid won't know or suffer??? That's just a stupid thing to tell your kids because they know its not true.

And if all the kids communicate through Instagram messaging or SC your child will be left out. At some point you have to let the kids learn how to manage social media, and you will be able to have more control/they will listen more in MS than they will in HS.

Actually, people can get bullied at school or workplace, but it is hard to get cyber bullied on social media if they are not on social media. Real life bullying happens when people know you and interact with you in real life. Cyberbullying can happen with someone who knows you and targets you, but is joined by online trolls who may not even know you.

I am a school counselor. Cyberbullying does not get traction at all when the intended victim is not on social media. The above pp has a great point, however, remember that even if the children are not on social media, they can be targeted and harmed by being on the internet or using their smart phones in many other ways.

But you're on an anonymous forum that is well known for being filled with mean people? That's kind of weird. I mean, you can create a closed Instagram page and follow puppy and kitten pages. Same for FB - you can totally shut down your page and only follow family members, and same for Twitter. I find it really weird that you would shun those - which can be made pretty much completely harmless, and yet be a member here. There is much more evil happening on DCUM.

And that's a pretty bold statement. I have two kids over 18 and in college, and neither of them ever got in trouble on social media. Perhaps rather than banning it altogether, you'd be better served by teaching them how to use it responsibly. I've always told my children that ANYTHING they say, no matter how private they think it is, is public domain and to bear that in mind when posting on social media.

Well we will have to agree to disagree, because I know two kids were were the subjects of cyberbullying on social media, though neither of them had phones or were on social media themselves.

I also dint allow ANY social media whatsoever. My 14yr old has absolutely zero issues communicating or socializing. He asked about Instagram back in 7th grade and I was clear it's not allowed and guess what? He doesnt care. Never even asks about it. He has absolutely no problem using texts and group chats.

If you are off social media and have no SM presence it isnt as fun bullying someone who isnt even on there. They'll move into a fresh, more fun target...someone who is active and who will immediately be impacted by it.
