How much do you set aside per year for your chid's 529?

NP here. I'm curious what that goal is, do you mind sharing? We do 8k a year and have 88k for our 8 year old. Likely umping up to 12k this year.

We have two kids, 8 & 11, and our goal is to fund 4 years of college (public or private) for each. I don’t want to oversave in the 529 accounts due to their limitations so we plan on having the equivalent of 4 years of private and 4 years of public in the 529 accounts. Anything needed above that will be funded through our after tax investment accounts or through cash flow.

We currently have a total of $272k. Based on the T Rowe calculator we are overfunding the accounts by about $500 per month so we just redirected that amount to our investment accounts.

We do $600/month (so $7200/year) plus gifts from parents. Starting 6th Grade, we have about $180,000 (and should have a lot more, but for some overly conservative investment choices early on).

But, there's no required amount. Do what you can. If that's $50/month, do that, and don't feel guilty about it. If you can prefund $150,000 at birth and watch it grow for 18 years, do that, and feel great about it.

That's still a little

You're a dick.

I don’t disagree PP is a dick but the point is correct. From being able to fund college education standpoint, it won’t be nearly enough without FA or merit scholarships.

We do $3600/year per kid (two kids). The government will pay for 36 months of one of their college educations (GI Bill). They can get loans, go to a service academy, or do ROTC if I don't have enough.

This is also what I do, but we have 2 kids and we put a total of $4000/kid/year. So the daycare account covered it when we only had one, now we spread the other $3k out by monthly $125/account payments.

Balance is $130K - currently contributing $500/monthly. This may change depending on income/expenses.

Kids are 4&5, the account will be divided equally.

And that's why the cost of college education is a total scam. Most of our parents saved little, if anything, for college. You either took out loans or paid from income. And certainly not thousands of dollars per year since birth!

But it is what it is, right? Each family will have to find a way - some will save, some kids will join military, some will borrow, and some, sadly, may not be able to attend.

You’re a jerk, PP. You have no idea about my finances.

Ignore that person. You’re doing great.

So? Not everyone has their college completely paid for by their parents. You do the best you can.

Of course... But I still think PP's statement is factually correct.

Anyone can state the obvious.
