That's still a little |
| $800/month per child (we have 2.) |
| $150 per kid per month. They are 12 and 10. Not too worried about it. They could get scholarships, we have other savings and can pay as we go for some of it. They can either work or take out loans for the rest. |
| 8k per kid each year - so 16k total. Kids are 3 & 6. |
|
$10k/yr. Four kids, so $2500 per kid. I am a physician and work very little right now so I can raise the kiddos. I will probably go back full time or close to full time when they hit college.
|
| $10k/yr per kid (2). They are now in 8th and 10th grade and have about $90k each. We didn't save anything until they were in ES and have gradually increased the amount plus grandparents added some. |
| 12k/year/kid. We didn’t start till they were in elementary school. |
| Kids are 8 and 6 and we save $500 a month per kid. Goal is to have $100K for each. |

College is 5 and 8 years out for our two children. We plan for full pay for both, so while it is divided among accounts, we think about it at a higher level given that 529s can change beneficiaries. Our current savings in college designated accounts is about 125K. We contribute our college savings to both 529s and Roth IRAs, as I will be old enough to withdraw when our youngest is in college.
We contribute 12K/year total. We also will at a minimum (absent unforeseen events) be able to cashflow $20K/year during their college years. One of my parents has been contributing to 529s for our kids and I expect about 50K from that. I expect that to put us in a position to cover 2/3s of the cost of private college for two from our current plan (savings and cashflow). We also are looking at our budget to see if we could save more, but we are balancing that against a desire to travel more with our kids these next few years as they seem like the best years for family adventure travel. |
| We’re doing $750/mo per kid. We also direct any bonuses mostly there. Our kids are young and we are front loading now while their activities and vacations are less expensive. We may back off later if we feel like we’re in a good place and would rather travel, pay for expensive sports or get a slightly larger house. |
You’re a jerk, PP. You have no idea about my finances. |
Our goal is to fund private for 1 kid and in-state public for the other. If both go private we’ll pay the difference out of other savings. We get some help from grandparents, so if kids get scholarships or we overshoot on savings, we’ll transfer the remaining funds to younger kids with the same grandparents - assuming no grad school plans. |
| $8,000/year per child since they were born. But we also seeded each account with an initial investment of $20K. |
| We try to do $4k a year per child, for the tax deduction. But with two preschool bills it's hard to do. Our goal is to try to get a good chunk in the 529, but certainly it won't be enough to pay for their entire college education. |

5.5yo DS has $66K in his 529 now and we are contributing $500/month
3yo DD has $35K in her 529 now and we are contributing $600/month DS has more because DH received a big annual bonus the year he was born. Our plan is to contribute the above amounts monthly and use a portion of DH's annual bonus every year to ramp up the balances. |
