Stars Lacrosse Club

Former Stars parent here, but quick question. Why in the world would a 7/8 player leave Stars at this age? They are on the path to Capital. Your theory to “lock down” players from going to lesser teams seems silly. I would love to have had August off from tryouts. Smart move.

Are the results from tryouts out yet? I'm just super curious as several players from my DD's team have been desperate to get on Stars and we would love to see that happen. No way I would just ask, though.

My DD is finishing up the current season as a 7/8 Stars player (do not want to identify exactly which year) on the Black team. Last August she, and at least half a dozen of her Stars teammates, tried out for (and were offered spots on) other clubs for a variety of very good reasons, one of which is the Black teams are not necessarily on a path to Capital like the Blue teams and the girls know it.

Your proving my point. Of course those girls were offered spots on other clubs. If you want to switch clubs you are not worried about when Stars has their 7/8 Tryouts, because you know your daughter will have a team. I haven’t heard of a 7th or 8th grade girl leaving Stars Blue for another club mentioned above. But there are plenty of girls coming the other way in 7th and 8th grade. So it doesn’t matter when Stars has tryouts.

I don't see how I am proving your point. DD, and some of her teammates, were not merely interested in switching clubs. They wanted to see if they had any better options than Stars Black. Some girls did/some didn't. But the only way they knew what their options were, and if any were better than Stars Black, was by trying out for the various clubs during that brief window in August. Tryouts at the end of June don't let the girls know what their options are, unless their parents are willing to let their daughters try out for other clubs in August and forfeit the $$ they've already paid to Stars.

I agree with you about Stars Blue unless you have a girl who is worried about getting moved down to Black. I've seen that happen to at least 6 girls now and at least one of them then decided to leave Stars completely for another club, and this was after paying Stars an attending some practices.

What happens when your daughter doesn’t make varsity as a Freshman? Will you look for better options? It’s 7/8 girls lacrosse, none of these games matter. Obviously the best option at this point is for her to work harder and get better so there is no question about her ability and team placement will come when she is older.

Not being mean, just saying there are plenty of girls who have played Stars Black and gone on to sign D1, difference is those parents supported there daughter and encouraged them, and didn’t go looking for other options. It’s all about perspective and determination.

NP. No, really it is about the resources focused on Black and Blue. Different by about 180 degrees. BTDT.

Of course the games don't matter but disagree with what you think of as the best option, which actually involves no options at all. Clearly you do not know my daughter, what she wants, how I parent her or Stars black.

Anything posted about results of tryouts?

Nothing's posted yet, but offers have been sent via email. People will of course change clubs, it's the nature of the business. They'll switch because they want a new coach, don't want to play on a B Team, want a chance to play a different position etc. MS Club games don't matter as the PP mentioned, but the training does. So choose a Club where your DD is going to learn the game, have fun and will be prepared to play in HS. Best of luck to everyone.

You are clouding the issue. While MS games (club or school) don't matter much they do prepare girls for highschool and college lax. Its the most important time to grow and learn lacrosse and that is not happening when you are the best player on a team or on a team with many girls who have little real skill yet. The problem with middle school club B teams is for the player on the bubble. Those girls get stuck on a B team like Stars black and while they may lead and dominate that team, they arent growing and developing their lacrosse IQ and getting to the next level because they are playing with others who are stlll developing stick skills. Thats very frustrating for a kid. That also leads to kids who are ball hogs and never pass because they can't rely on their teammates to catch. And that is not a growth experience for anyone. Stars black teams typically have 2-5 players who are on that bubble and then also 2-5 who have very weak stick skills and are pretty new to the game. The latter group brings down the learning curve for the whole team but its the first group that suffers the most. Those girls may have a chance to make Capital but they have to do a heck of a lot of work on their own, well beyond what most kids do, to make a top high school club like Capital and the truth is that there is only so much one can do to develop lacrosse IQ outside of playing games. There is a reason so many girls work hard to get and stay on the blue team - it does matter in the long run as it shapes who they become as players.

Or, she could not live and breathe lacrosse, but rather have fun and a real childhood. My DD plays on one of the strong clubs' B team so she can stay active, keep a stick in her hand, and DO OTHER THINGS. She has a friend on a Stars blue team who actively posts on social media how sick of lacrosse she is and wishes her mom would stop signing her up for so much lacrosse. You all should listen to your daughters and get lives.

Well my DD constantly asks for more. It’s her passion and it’s what she wants to spend much of her time doing. That’s fine if your DD doesn’t and isn’t that into it but mine is. I support her as best I can. That said she still plays other sports, plays an instrument and gets top grades. She loves her life and lives to be doing what she loves. Don’t be so quick to judge other kids by your own.

Not judging the kids. Judging the parents, so many of whom have ruined sports for everyone. I say this as a previous D1 lacrosse player who loved it, along with many other things, and my parents were not so obsessed.

It seems like high schools are again becoming more important than clubs with the end of early recruiting, so really unclear how much of this really matters as long as girls are playing against decent competition in middle school. I think one poster here is way too obsessed with Black v. Blue. Really hard to believe that the Blue coaching is that much better when both teams do very well in tournaments and NGLL.
