Maybe top 10 in the state of Indiana but nowhere near a top 10 nationwide. |
You have no idea what you’re talking about. |
It's a beautiful campus and the weather isn't as cold as Madison or Ann Arbor. And more so than Wisconsin and probably even Michigan, it's very popular with Jewish kids from the Mid-Atlantic whose parents can afford to send them to a more attractive school than, say, UMD or Rutgers, so there's a comfort factor at play than wouldn't exist at every school in the Midwest. |
Indiana has long been VERY popular among upper middle & affluent kids from the Chicago area, too. Growing up in the affluent burbs of Chicago, IU, and to a slightly lesser extent Iowa, was a top choice for kids who just missed the mark for U of Illinois (or who didn’t want to go there for various reasons). |
| Indiana admits some directly into it's business school. The business school is well regarded and the assurance of knowing you're already IN is important. Too often the student has to worry about being accepted into their preferred major. |
| Anyone questions why someone would want to go to Indiana has never been there. It also has many strong departments, excellent sports, Big 10 . . . It is a great place for many, and as someone noted, much like Wisconsin. |
IU has a good business school and great programs in music. Bloomington is a fun college town. |
I've never heard of Earlham |
Texas A & M may be a reach depending on PP's son's scores due to the Texas 10% law. See College Confidential. |
Oh, we were supposed to take this list seriously? I thought it was a parody of every DCUM Tiger Mom's college list for their kids. |

Getting back to the link showing where Bethesda HS students applied and were accepted I found these details really puzzling.
So 60% of all Bethesda area HS students were accepted by UMDCP But 67% of applicants were accepted to Edinburgh and 63% were accepted by Toronto Far more prestigious universities, in most people's opinions. St Mary's also accepted 60% of applicants (and had far fewer than UMDCP with only 230 as opposed to 1971) |
I thought they all go to Tulane? |
| Indiana has a respectable business school -- and offers a lot of merit aid. |
+1- Indiana has a strong business school. My son applied and got into the school as "pre-business" and he was admitted directly into business schools at other well regarded universities. |
Self-selection. UMDCP is easily accessible in the minds of pretty much every high school and as the statistics show LOTS apply there even if they're not qualified. Whereas Edinburgh and Toronto aren't really schools that many students are applying to (or even know about)- especially not average/poor students - so the numbers look better. I bet if 1971 MoCo students applied to Edinburgh and Toronto...there wouldn't be a 67%/63% acceptance rate... |
