where Bethesda area high schoolers apply

It looks like the most popular places to apply to ( 200 or more applications) are: Cornell, Duke, George Washington, Georgetown, Indiana University, Johns Hopkins, Montgomery, New York University, Northeastern, Northwestern, Penn State, Princeton, Salisbury, St. Mary's, Stanford, Temple, Towson, Tulane, Berkeley, Delaware, UMCP, Michigan, North Carolina, Penn, Pitt, Virginia, Washington U St. Louis,

I have to admit I'm surprised by Indiana.

Harvard
Yale
MIT
Stanford

He is also thinking about
Princeton
UPen
Georgetown
Cornell
TA&M

The most important are HYM..

OP, why are you surprised by Indiana? It is an excellent school.

Illinois is excellent as well but it isn't on the list. Why is Indiana? Do they give lots of merit aid?

Surprised UCLA- the most applied to school in the country- doesn't show up

Despite claims on DCUM that everyone graduates with straight As, there are plenty of B+ students who aren't going to get in to most of the listed schools.

Indiana is in a fun college town, has a great business school, and has relatively easy admissions. I can see why well off parents would rather send their kids there instead of Towson.

That list is really not that different than for other wealthier HSs compared to Bethesda, and it makes me wonder whether having your kid go to BCC or Whitman is any different than RM or Wootton.

Lots of Jewish kids at Indiana. The ones who can't get into Michigan.

What do you have to do to get rejected there? It is supposed to be open enrollment. This is on top of...

in Maryland, 35% of students need remediation in reading and writing, and 65% need remediation in mathematics (MCOIR).

It is. But it isn't easy driving distance to DC. It is a large state school. There are lots of very good large state schools that are not close to DC. I wonder why that one is popular in particular. Bloomington is a cute town, but that's about it.

I'm surprised that, except for St. Mary's, there is not a single LAC on the list.

Your son had better have some safeties lined up. Most of the schools on that list (aside from UMCP and Texas A&M) are reaches, even for top students.
