Not that I have heard.

I would imagine this wouldn't begin to be resolved until after DCI finds a new HOS.

Any info sessions on days other than Tuesday evenings?

Why does DCI need a new HOS?

Because Mary Schaffner is leaving at the end of this school year.

Sorry - her title is Executive Director. At any rate, they have hired a search firm and are recruiting a replacement. http://js-staffing-15001413710.force.com/careers/ts2__JobDetails?jobId=a0K61000009wpIXEAY&tSource=

Why is she leaving?

I think her plan has always been to stay through the school launch and completion of the building renovation.

She is being pushed out by the board, or at least that is what I was told at the most recent CFR

What is CFR?

That would show surprisingly good judgment by the board. Mary is an organizer, not an educator. Her contributions have been incredibly valuable. And now, with the school an actual going concern and the building nearly complete, it's time for the educators to take over.

The stupid shit you hear on dcum: Mary is most certainly NOT being "pushed out by the board".

I am a parent of a 2nd grader thinking about moving to DC. I know I'm a dolt, but I'm having a little trouble gauging the competitiveness of the lottery.

I realize Yu Ying is impossible, but I was hoping for DCI Chinese come 5th or 6th grade. I know nothing is guaranteed, but does this seem like a likely option?

(PS I am interested in Chinese for personal/family reasons, rather than just an general interest in immersion)

I don't think you can predict it OP. DCI starts at 6th though, not 5th.

Other schools offer some Chinese -- if you are a new student to it in 6th you're not doing immersion anyway. I know you can take Chinese as a foreign language Deal and BASIS. Perhaps others.

I don't know where I got 5th grade from...

My child already has a Chinese background and is currently in a Chinese immersion program in another area. She would have a strong background even if she moved to a non-immersion elementary school before enrolling in middle school at DC. so I was hoping DCI would offer some kind of continuation.

I"m sure DCI would. But it's a crap shoot. If you get a good number in the lottery, you can almost certainly get in at 6th. If not, you're out of luck. If you get in, DCI will give your child a test to determine what level Chinese to take.

You should also look at Thomson Elementary, which has more than token Chinese in elementary.
