Montgomery County offers a limited amount of Chinese immersion. If you are moving to the area you might check it out and see how to access the program..

I realize Yu Ying is impossible, but I was hoping for DCI Chinese come 5th or 6th grade. I know nothing is guaranteed, but does this seem like a likely option?

(PS I am interested in Chinese for personal/family reasons, rather than just an general interest in immersion)

I don't think you can predict it OP. DCI starts at 6th though, not 5th.

Other schools offer some Chinese -- if you are a new student to it in 6th you're not doing immersion anyway. I know you can take Chinese as a foreign language Deal and BASIS. Perhaps others.

I don't know where I got 5th grade from...

My child already has a Chinese background and is currently in a Chinese immersion program in another area. She would have a strong background even if she moved to a non-immersion elementary school before enrolling in middle school at DC. so I was hoping DCI would offer some kind of continuation.

Thanks!

I"m sure DCI would. But it's a crap shoot. If you get a good number in the lottery, you can almost certainly get in at 6th. If not, you're out of luck. If you get in, DCI will give your child a test to determine what level Chinese to take.

You should also look at Thomson Elementary, which has more than token Chinese in elementary.

That would be ideal, but it wouldn't work for commute.

There are several other partial immersion programs for 5th graders in the DMV area (not previously mentioned on this thread)...
-Paint branch elementary also a competitive lottery, for PG county residents. Not sure if you can test in, like you can at MoCo schools
-Reid Temple Christian Academy

Unfortunately... native Chinese are not significant portion of participants at either of the above programs.

DCI had over 500 students on the waiting list this year....And trend seems to be that more and more feeder kids are staying.
