| There are all sorts of state laws that need to be met in terms of when seasons have to end and when they begin. the schedule is set years in advance and you also have to take into consideration the construction that takes place at schools and like most posters said. People who are in this lifestyle are totally fine with it. It sounds like the OP has a kid who runs cross country and there are tons of kids who do that but i am sure the top runner sand their parents are ok with it as well. Chances are they are just doing the sport to put it on a college application-easiest sport due to no cuts usually. |
| How about all the teacher/coaches who will have to get someone to cover their classes on day 1? Great start with a sub! But to those who don't care about kids having to miss the first day, I guess you don't care if your kid has a sub either. |
no because like many days they will do nothing the first day. |
Sometimes people have to make choices. For example: should I attend a full day of classes on the first day of school, or should I play a fall high school sport? |

WOW! Do you know anyone on a cross country team? Just because there are no cuts does not mean they do not work really hard at practices and meets! While there are no cuts, tons of kids drop out because the practices are so challenging. |

Yeah, that one made me laugh too. As the XC runners say, "My sport is your sport's punishment."
"Chances are they are just doing the sport to put it on a college application-easiest sport due to no cuts usually." |

No one gave us this choice. MCPS knew what the schedule was many months ago and didn't put it out so we could make this decision.
The kids have been practicing since the spring and if they drop out they are letting everyone who stays down. My guess is that EVERYONE on here complaining will suck it up and miss the classes. The point is that the ADs should hear about it before then. Remember, if there is a weather issue on the first day of school, the ADs will somehow figure it out. I know at our school which has produced many state champions that they do not allow kids who got cut form other sports to join after the cuts of those sports because so many kids wanted to join it just for that reason. to put on an application. |
It's still a choice. Your kid could drop out. It's just that your kid doesn't want to drop out. So ok, your kid has chosen to attend the meet and miss the first afternoon of class. |
| Mcps had a choice too and chose the easy one that does not put education first. |
So then I guess it's up to you to put education first? |
|
They have their reasons, they know they have to follow Hogan's lead or else.
"Mcps had a choice too and chose the easy one that does not put education first." |
Where is that? |
|
Yes, by getting the ADs to do their jobs.
