I just think that if there people are askig for TJ to increase outreach efforts to create a diverse student body, same logic should apply to Banneker. I think PP is right that DCPS and school adminstrators don't care to diversity, which is the problem.

What would be interesting to see is what happens if lots of white Ward 3 families start getting admitted to Banneker, and it threatens to become majority white. I can imagine there being some frustration.

Apply, who is stopping you - only your own mindset!

The primary thing stopping me is the fact that my child is only 6 years old.

Do Banneker administrators arrange information sessions at DCPS and private schools that white kids attend? You cannot expect white kids to attend a school with no racial diversity without some serious outreach. Otherwise, they get the message that they are not welcome.

Why should they? They are not hurting for students. Parents pore over data, stats, etc and you're telling me they "assumed" it was for AA students only! How is that possible, after the furore about "Rob Brown" being selective...Maybe a Newcomer to DC thought that, but on the whole racism plain and simple, but Banneker is not hurting! And isn't the principal a non-AA and many of the staff, kids are doing well, teachers are happy, and the principal was principal of the year.

Can you explain why it's "racism" that I didn't know the details of how Banneker operates and admits students?

OH please. DCUM and DC moms research every single school like there is nobody's business. I've talked to moms working school fair and they knew more about my school than I did. Don't try to play that you don't know the school is open to everyone in DC. First thing you see every year with scores and showing Banneker #1, that doesn't make you want to inquire about the school? Excuses are like assholes....

So you don't know anything about me or my situation, but because you assume every parent must know everything about every school, my lack of knowledge makes me a racist in your eyes? My child is 6.

I guess I know what kind of person you are.

There should be a suicide rate on here, too, just so that all the relevant info is out in the open.

Among publics in DC SWW still ranks highest, followed by Banneker.

Washington Latin's SAT/ACT scores seem low - and only 18% of last year's seniors passed at least 1 AP exam?

But wait, isn't SAT scores the only reason white folk won't look at Banneker? Yet they'll flock to Latin. Sad.

Excellent point.

Banneker - SAT average for 2016 = 1038
Washington Latin - SAT average for 2016 = 943

Why do people send kids there?

Anonymous wrote:True, but that also means school such as TJ in Va should not be have to make any effort to diversify the student body to include more AA, low income and Hisopanic kids. Why is okay for a selective school to be 99% AA and Hispanic but not 99% white/asian. I don't think either is right but I do think standards/expectations need to be consistent.

Diversity adds value as well. Trust me, I've seen many white people say the most ridiculous and offensive things at work sometimes. I'm glad that i attended an extremely diverse school.

Latin spins their data to make it sound better (their language in plain text; my annotation is in bold)

Our graduation rate is consistently among the highest in DC [below 100%], and our students demonstrate their high level of college preparation with an exceptionally high pass rate on Advanced Placement exams – more than 75% received scores between 3 and 5 (all passing, with 5 as the top score) many students at WL don't take APs; if you don't get a high enough grade in the pre-requisite you can't enroll in AP. Latin students also exceed the national and DC average on College Board’s PSAT and SAT tests. DC average is very low

Nearly 100% of each senior class has been accepted to college. Our 225 alumni received nearly $21 million in scholarships, including eight Posse Scholars, three George Washington University Trachtenberg Scholars, and two Beat the Odds Scholars. One of our 2015 graduates was accepted to West Point Preparatory School, West Point Prep is for students who have promise for West Point but are judged to need another year of academics before enrolling the first DC charter school student ever to do so.
I'm talking about Latin, and I'm really asking.

Because an average SAT score, GPA, and AP tests passed says nothing about how individual kids (your kid, my kid) will do at the school. If you don't want to send your kid there, fine. More spots for those of us who want them.

So doesn't that argument hold for SH? Or Jefferson? Or Bannker and Eastern?

You can't toss out data and then reject these other schools.

Not everyone has the choices you do. Latin is the least-worst option if you aren't IB for Wilson, weren't accepted to Walls and can't afford private.

Sounds like the mother of a mediocre white kid. I'm sorry that you and your kid is such a failure you have to resort to racism.

Latin's 18% AP participation is so grim that it sounds like a typo. Could it be a mistake? How can this be possible after a MS program offering great rigor/a classical education? I would have guessed that at least 2/3 of Latin HS students take APs, and that the SAT average was, say 1200. What is going at at this to-die-for charter? The Emperor may have clothes, but just underwear.
