Suggest a Caribbean island that is safe and easy to drive around to explore

Virgin Gorda. The USVI also.

Puerto Rico...caves, tropical rain forest, dry forest, bioluminescent bays, black sand beaches, white sand beaches, north side rough big waves, south calm and sunny. Move every other day to a new place(maybe an hour or 2 in the car). If you want to see a lot of different places on the same island Puerto Rico haa it.

Barbados. We have been to many of the islands and feel that this is by far the best to drive around.

Not in my experience. The roads are narrow, curvy and mountainous.

Can't believe no one has said St. Croix! It's the US, so there is a basic social safety net and you don't have to worry about the vast differences in wealth between vacationers and residents. Roads are modern and the island is big enough to be interesting, with mountainous areas, a small rainforest, and of course beautiful coast roads.

I hate doing that.

As an American, you cannot rent a car in Bermuda. You can take a cab, rent a scooter or take the bus.

We found a great cab driver at the resort and we used him many times to show us around the island. It was great.

One thing to note, though. Bermuda is not in the Caribbean.

St Martin is dreadful? Could've fooled me. Spent a week there this past winter, French side. Perfectly clear water by day, 5* French meals by night. Yup, it was awful.

Isn't crime up in Puerto Rico because the economy is suffering and all of the rich people have fled the island?

Barbados is not safe. I will never go back there.
Antigua neither.

I'd advise Saint Martin/Sint Maarten or American Virgin Island.

St Barths. I didn't feel safe in St Martin.

Barbados is the worst island to drive around. Not much to see, SO MANY PEOPLE, and they aggressively approach you even with kids. Never again. We rented a car and after the first day it just sat because the hotel was far preferable. And I really like exploring/driving and have done so in plenty of countries around the world.

that doesn't mean its not safe? its a small enough island no real way to get lost...if you make a wrong a turn you eventially get back to where you started..

rented cars twice. for a total of 3.5 weeks on the island. never had any problems or saw any bad accidents. had a flat tire once but no big deal.

the east side is flatter drier while the west side is more tropical, mountainous and curvy.

its no worse than costa rica, or colombia, mexico. At least in my opinion..

I was just in San Juan 2 weeks ago, no problem. Rented a car a few days to do excursions on our own. Loved it. Highly recommend.

I actually came here to recommend Barbados. We had a completely different experience and have had 2 amazing vacations on Barbados. Exploring in-land and along the west and east coasts was easy and fun for us and not at all crowded. The hotel and restaurant options were terrific and we didn't have any issues with the people.
