The title says it all. We love beach/island vacations, but we don't want to feel trapped at a resort because it isn't safe to explore on your own. We would rather explore on our own than have to book formal excursions. We don't like eating all our meals at a resort, and prefer to venture off to other restaurants. We enjoy wandering around towns/cities to see local art, etc. We like a mix of beachtime, culture and sightseeing.
Where have you enjoyed traveling and exploring---with kids (elementary thru HS)? |
| Aruba is very safe and we drove around the entire Island when we were there. There are enough sightseeing places for a few days of exploring. We got lost a few times because roads are not well marked, but the island isn't that large. |
| Guadeloupe |
| St. Martin (really nice to drive around since you can stay on the Dutch side and drive over to the French side) and Aruba |
| Cozumel |
| St Barthes |
| Aruba and Bonaire are both lovely for this. |
St Martin, agree with this. But hands down stay on the French side. The Dutch side is tacky and full of McDonalds, TGI Fridays etc. |
|
Anguilla. But there's not much there other than great restaurants and beaches.
Also agree with Aruba. St. Martin/St. Maarten is way too congested for me - I was stressed out by all the traffic! Esp. when cruise ships are in port. |
| Puerto Rico. Each side of the island is different and it very easy driving. |
| Grand Cayman. |
| Not the Caribbean, but Bermuda. |
|
Bermuda = you gotta drive on the left side of the road.
I hate doing that. |
| Do you like nature? Vieques. |
| Martinique if you like French culture and food. |
