How many field trips has your MCPS Elem School taken so far this year?

3rd grade - zero and zero planned. In general, kids have very few field trips until 4th grade. Our experience has been zero field trips in 1st and 3rd. My older kids just visited Strathmore in 2nd. My youngest had one additional. W schools definitely don't get more than others.

1st and 3rd grade---zero so far, though the 1st grader has one planned in December.

My kids were in a W feeder elementary school. From what I can remember they did Strathmore, Mt. Vernon, and maybe a pumpkin patch early in elementary. Very few field trips which was disappointing considering we live in an area with so many amazing field trip opportunities.

We are in a W feeder school and we seem to have mostly in-school field trips. I'm not sure why the kids don't actually get to go anywhere.

Also a W school parent and completely agree. It's a shame because there are a lot of great educational opportunities in this area and its a shame not to take advantage of them.

Why is that? When I was an MCPS student we took at least two trips every year in elementary.

Because class sizes are HUGE in MCPS now! It's so much harder to find a venue that will take 100 kids then maybe 40 or so (from when we were in school). Sometimes our school will split up the 6 classes and do 3 at a time on the field trip, but that is still over 60 kids.

Also, there is so much emphasis on testing and assessments, that any time out of the classroom is considered a negative.

Our 3rd grade class has not taken any so far. We did have one in house.

Not at a W school.

1st grade: 1, and it was a walking distance visit.

W school - DD is in fourth grade. One field trip per month, including 3 to downtown DC and 2 to Baltimore (participating in mock battles at Fort McHenry and experiments at the Acquairum - great fun!)
