Walking dead - the beginning is nigh upon us.

There's a website I like: http://walkingdead.wikia.com/wiki/The_Walking_Dead_Wiki

They follow the plot and characters in detail for both the TV show and the comic book series. I might just read the episode synopsis on that website for a while so I can keep up and not have to watch the gruesome scenes.

You'd think this would be the last season anyway. Who can keep this up for more than 7 seasons?

+1 My husband and I watched last night's episode but I felt sick to my stomach watching the gory details. I've watched the show from the beginning and have always loved it, but this was just too much for me. The eye socket scene with Glenn threw me over the edge. And then Rick almost mutilating his son? No. I couldn't take it. And then to see the last sequence with Glenn and his son, who looked to be about the same age as my Asian/White mixed son... are you kidding me? Too freaking intense, all of it.

The zombies are scary and all but the evil characters like Negan keep me up at night. I get that that's the whole point of the apocalyptic world scenario, that the humans can be scarier than the zombies, but as my husband said, why the hell would we want to start our week off feeling depressed and horrible because of this show? I'll follow along via the internet this season but until this storyline breaks off into something new, I'm out.

Per the writers on Talking Dead after the show, they've got a lot more story to tell.

Ooh, let me guess. There's a big bad guy, that they eventually defeat, then they find what they think is a safe place, and they find some peace for a while, but food is scarce and they need to venture out for miscellaneous supplies, and they run into some new people who seem bad but turn out to be good/good who turn out to be bad, and then some minor characters die right as we were beginning to care about them, and then there's another big bad guy, etc. etc. Also, there's about 5 lbs. of plot in a 10 lb. bag, and everything moves at a snail's pace with increasingly gimmicky scenarios and cliffhangers.

This story was meant for a graphic novel...as an hour-long show for 7 seasons and counting, it is unsustainable. I'm with the other PPs, I'm done.

Could not agree more, PP. I could have written your post (minus the kid who is half Asian, although my son is also around that age). The moment that nearly broke me was when I thought he was going to chop off Carl's arm. I was having heart palpitations and honestly had trouble falling asleep. I've always been invested - to a fault - in the shows that I get really into, so I kept saying to my wife "If they chop off Carl's arm, I can't continue watching this" and I think she thought I was being a little silly.

Watching the Talking Dead after the Walking Dead provided perspective to see the actors playing the characters of Abraham and Glenn, were still alive and joking and perfectly fine.

Remind yourself. It is just a show.

I wonder if you see it from Negan's perspective? He had to break Rick because Rick and his group attacked and killed Negan's group first. To them, Rick is the aggressor. Rick made a fatal error to attack Negan first before Negan attacked them.

Strategy.

Any readers of the graphic novels in here? I have a question: Since the show often follows storylines from the novels but with a twist/character switch I'm wondering if Negan taking Daryl ("I like him, he's mine now") matches a story from the book? If so, what happened to that character?
I hate that Negan killed two strong characters and took a third, leaving our group so weak. And I am so worried about Daryl! If we lose another character from the first season it will be so heartbreaking.

My son's read all the comics to date and Daryl's not a character in them. In the comic, Negan takes Carl.

Ah, Carl, okay. Thanks!
I knew Daryl was not a character in the comics, so was curious if Negan took someone else in the books, or didn't take anyone at all. I believe I've heard Carl became somewhat sympathetic/friendly with Negan at some point. Let's hope Daryl does not join Negan's crew!
Last night's episode topped my all time most uncomfortable episdoe which was Bob's leg and the Termites - "Tainted meat!" Now that episode seems mild in comparison

This doesn't happen in the comic, meaning Negan does not take any hostages. The other poster is incorrect, Carl actually stows away to Negan's compound and Negan returns him rather quickly after the discovery

PP here, I just asked my son about this and he explained to me that I got it wrong when he explained it to me (he's 13), lol. My apologies!

I'm a little surprised at all of the PPs who say that this is the episode that was over the top.

What about the episode where Lizzie (a child) killed her sister, and then Carol killed Lizzie (again, a child). That wasn't over the top?

That said, I agree with the PPs that the show has gotten entirely too gimmicky. The writers/producers like to go on and on about the "story they're trying to tell," but it seems pretty obvious that they're being gimmicky, incorporating a lot of really forced twists in order to shock people, and over-using cliffhangers, none of which adds to the story they are trying to tell and, in my opinion, actually gets in the way of any kind of story.

Not to mention, it's pretty much the same plot over and over and over again. I think the show should have ended a few seasons ago. I kind of lost interest when they brought back the governor. That's when I felt like it was about more gimmicks/surprise twists/cliffhangers than it was about any kind of story or character development, whatever.

Now it's pretty much like a gory soap opera: people only tune in to see (1) who will hook up/pair up and (2) who dies.

Hmmm, do you realize that the comics are a LOT darker than the show? I only say that because you might not be aware what your 13-year-old son is reading. I'm not saying either way whether a 13-year-old should be allowed to read that kind of material. I don't read the comics; a friend does. For example, in the comics, there's rape -- even of children. I believe when they're at the prison, one of the convicts is found out to be raping a child. It's pretty horrible stuff.

Again, I'm hoping this doesn't come across as judgmental. I'm not judging. Just making sure you're aware. The show (even including last night's episode) is a LOT less intense and dark and weird than the comics from what I'm told. The comics deal with pretty adult subject matter.

Thanks, I'm aware, but appreciate the warning!

THIS is the storyline break. That is the entire point of this episode, as awful as it was. Bringing Rick and group to their knees, destroying their spirit, bringing them to heel.

I really don't get people getting so upset by the violence here. This was awful, for certain, but for reasons even going beyond the actual deaths. Family members were lost. Futures gone. The emotional manipulation and humiliation . . . it was terrible. BUT, I can name a dozen other things that were also as horrible if we are just looking at it from gore/violent perspective . . . after all, its the WALKING DEAD not Gilmore Girls. Sheesh.

Totally disagree. I think it's interesting and they've done a good job keeping it fresh, as did the comics. The storylines may have some similarities but, at the same time, they are different. I think very little about who is pairing up and who is "next." I"m just enjoying the ride.
