Montco Schools are no longer the best

My kid go to FCPS in VA, and I read the MD Schools forum occasionally. I see posts talking about how great the teachers are, how interesting the curriculum is, how much their children are learning. They are learning to be excellent writers, to think deeply about math, etc.

Then there are the posts about how bad MCPS is, how they're dumbing down the curriculum. The contrast is striking.

I live in moco. Sometimes I read the VA school forum. I see the same pattern there, too. I think it goes to show that there is no perfect solution, and no system will make everyone happy.

They have never been the best.

Bring in the immigrants, bring in the refugees, keep them coming, but, eventually the tax base shrinks and the schools as a whole suffer. Sadly the social experiment failed and is probably not reversible at this point. Private school here I come.

OP here. I came home, looked at my partner and said I give up, no more public schools unless we want our kids brainwashed and illiterate because public schools aren't about learning and education anymore. Looking at privates for next year too. So sad. We want a public school experience for our kids, but not willing to risk their futures over it. And the class was exploding. 28 kids, one teacher and for at least half the class, English is not their first language. No way the teacher has time to give so many needy students what they need.

I don't understand your comments. Do you think privates don't preach the same gospel of inclusiveness? Do you not realize that a class of 28 kids is typical in most public school systems in the area? Something about your posts just seems very contrived to me, as if you're just looking for an opportunity to engage in some Trumpetry.

I would expect and hope that any good private will teach inclusiveness because it is vital and important but not to the complete omission of school acheivement goals. It was a lecture that I would have liked to see expanded to include the Educational goals for MCPS. It is the beginning of the year, what does MCPS see for the children? What do those extra tax dollars mean? Textbooks, technology, smaller class sizes, more buses? And if you think 28 per class is acceptable, then good for you. It's not for me. Not a child in that class benefits with the teachers spread so thin.

i went to public school - in the 80s, in potomac and 28 was normal. our classes were huge. switched to private for middle/highschool. My sister lives in Howard county- their schools seem quite good. Why not move there? I think all of the overpopulation of gaithersburg and germantown is putting too much of a strain- i mean damascus and olney used to be farm land, same with burtonsville or whatever. I grew up near potomac village, would move back to the upper mass/river road area again if my mom needed me closer than dc- fwiw my parents were immigrants- but Bethesda/Potomac/CC and maaayyybe near parts of rockville - richard montgomery area are the only parts of Montgomery county that are tolerably good school wise, anywhere else and you might as well be living in ohio or indiana.- its nowheresville USA

Yes I'm an immigrant, a very high achieving one and my kids are too. RACIST (to the original poster).

OP here. That word has absolutely lost it's meaning and does not hurt me one bit. It says way more about you that you would resort low ball name calling. My best friends are black, asian hispanic. A dinner party at my house looks like the UN. Guess what? They also wwant the public schools to focus on a quality education for the children, acheivement, excellence. But they aren't small minded like you.

You actually said "my best friends are black" well unfortunately as a result, you slot neatly into the definition of a "racist". I thought people stopped saying those kind of idiotic things in the 1980s. You're showing your age and / or total lack of integration into today's society.

Nothing stays being the "best". The question is "is it working for your child?". If the answer is no, then find something else. Our hs back to school was 2 hours to squeeze in 8 time periods plus moving through the crowded halls. How much did you expect them to say? It's to put a face with a name and hear a little about what they will be learning. If you want more, make an appointment with the principal or counselor.

True. Howard county schools have been the best in Maryland for years now. Crawl out from under your rock OP.

Also the children of Asian immigrants have been outperforming whites for years.

Private schools allow entitled families to protect their children from the realities of life and ensure inflated grades and homogeneous friends. That's it. There is a reason why so many private school students get 'great grades' but "can't seem to take those darn standardized tests" very well. It's because the grades are a gift paid for by tuition and the kids aren't that smart - they are just white, entitled, and have hovering parents to ensure short term success.

When your child goes to college, they are better served by a public school education where they need to figure out what to study and no one is giving them a gift. 28 students is fine. This is ridiculous.

Stop bad mouthing different races and immigrants. They have accomplished more than you have and had to do it with racists trying to undermine them the entire way. And these posts just prove that.

The hypocrisy on this post is amazing. Entitled (white) SAHMs who accomplish nothing other than coddling their children and complaining about how it's the school systems fault for their kids' poor performance. Unbelievable.

Oh - and please don't think all white people are this racist and ignorant. I swear this forum has gotten worse in the last year with the racists feeling more comfortable saying ignorant things and (ironically) blaming the 'system' for their child't mediocre performance.

It is interesting that most of the Intel science winners don't come from private schools.

Because people who have black friends don't say stuff like that. I'd wager they also aren't worried about their special snowflakes getting enough attention from the teacher because of the children of immigrants in their classrooms.

Lol, I was accused of being racist. How else do you rebut such a slanderous accusation? It is the word extremist like you use to shut down any conversation of which they don't approve. In this case, the quality of Montco schools which is on the decline because it is busting at the seams and it is apparent why to everyone.

There needs to be more discussion about how Montcoo is going to justify the tax increase for the schools. The Super needs to lay out how he plans on improving them for everyone, not just preferred groups and not by lowering the bar with grade inflation which is all we have heard about so far. Hello, how about smaller class sizes, more teachers, teachers aides, textbooks, building more schools? Give us some ideas on how the additional money is going to be used instead of just a condescending lecture. A brief overview on his plans would have been nice. But his omission of these things speaks volumes about where Montco is headed and I am growing more and more certain my kids won't be along for that ride.

And FTR, I cherish my friends of all colors and I am fortunate to have them and there is nothing you could ever say that would diminish my gratitude or affection for them, including calling me the R word. That word means nothing to me or anyone else when you hurl it around so carelessly.
