Your engagement ring

Anonymous
I was 24 and my ring was 1 carat center stone with baguettes on the sides. A little over a year ago, just before our 20th anniversary, one of the baguettes was lost. It was going to cost $700 to replace and otherwise repair the ring, so I went ahead and upgraded the mounting and it now matches my anniversary band (my wedding set was yellow gold and the anniversary band was platinum).

It's my grandmother's ring, originally purchased for her in the 1940s and I love it

How many carats was the ring?
Did you upgrade? Why?

I was 29 he was 33. It is a ruby with two smaller diamonds on either side. It was a ring I wanted for a long time that I had planned on purchasing myself for myself.

Never thought about no need an "upgrade".

One carat center stone of very high quality with half carat on either side. I love it and I wear it all the time. It's very tasteful and I would never ever upgrade it. DH picked out the most perfect setting.

It's not a diamond, it's a family ring.
WHAT?! Upgrade what?

It's a pearl, with two small circle-shaped hammered silver rings that I wear as 'wedding bands' on either side of it.
I was 25, he was 26.
I picked it out after his choice arrived and looked more like a molar than the pearl in the picture. I think it cost $110 total. Because pearls degrade over time, I bought a set of matching pearl earrings from the same jeweler that are well cared for/ seldom worn that will be my 'heirlooms' to pass down.

If my pearl becomes totally misshapen I can see paying to have it replaced, but not as an 'upgrade'.

Not upgrading, though I do wish DH had picked out white gold or platinum instead of yellow gold. I hate yellow gold but I love DH.

1.5ct center stone with .75 ct stones on either side.
Will not upgrade. One of the side stones is a family heirloom from my side and there are 2 tiny diamonds on the inside of the band that were from my MILs engagement ring. DH designed it and it's very very special to me.

I'm not a jeweler, but it might be possible to have it plated over. I don't consider that upgrading, merely correcting a color preference. Just a thought.
