less than a carat -- not sure never, family ring |

1/2 ct stone and another 1/2 ct of 5 pointers on the shank. At some point I may get a blingy anniversary band - I have a silly weakness for eternity bands - but I won't change my engagement ring. |

about 1 carat sapphire in platinum setting with diamond baguettes. I picked out the ring, which was from antique store, I paid 50%, and dont plan on 'upgrading'. then again, I dont wear it much either (dont wear rings in general). |

No engagement ring (We were super-broke students.) I will never get one. We could afford to buy one now, but I'd rather spend the money on traveling. I wouldn't wear it, anyway, because I work at a hospital and have patient contact. I don't like to wear rings because I have to wash my hands so much, and keeping detailed rings clean is a pain. |

No idea - it's a large middle stone with 2 smaller on each side Original was lost in hospital after birth of DC 1 when I was rushed to emergency surgery from L&D .
Replaced it after our 10th anniversary with an almost identical ring. DH had been wanting to for 6 years and I finally agreed. Feels weird to have one back on again! I looked at lots of rings, but in the end, couldn't picture loving a different ring on my finger. |

1.5 carat center stone + pave band. added to it later with a diamond eternity band that I wear with it |

.75 carats Actually downgraded. Don't wear it much and since the ring and wedding band were soldered, I now pretty much use a thin diamond band I bought in France before I even met my husband. |

I like jewelry as much as the next person, and still have my two carat center stone "push present" on my right hand.
I will say, however, that when you are putting your beautiful engagement ring and wedding bands in the safety deposit box at the bank after 20 years of marriage so that your youngest can someday make a necklace out of the stones, you realize that that a pretty ring doesn't save you from an alcoholic abusive partner who started abusing you the day after the wedding and got worse from there. PSA: I would focus a little less on the ring if I were giving advice to the person starting all these engagement ring threads. |

1 carat oval solitaire in platinum, exactly as I wanted. (My hands are on the small side, and larger stones look ridiculous on me.) No need to "upgrade" the ring or my husband! |

.5 carat Tanzanite DH designed it from my ideas and I'm never upgrading - it's perfect |
I was 27 when we got engaged and he was 29. The ring is a one carat solitaire surrounded by another half carat of pavé diamonds. I did not upgrade because the yellow diamond and setting of the ring attract enough attention as it is! I learned by wearing this ring that there are a lot of tacky people who think it's okay to stare at people's rings and ask about the cost. I am a big law attorney, so I had no idea people would find my ring this compelling. |

2.5 carat center stone with additional .75 c stones in either side Pave eternity band Love it, never wear it No point in upgrading |
PP here. I also have a wedding band encrusted with diamonds, so I admit the overall effect is a bit blingy. Both rings came from Tiffany and were designed to match. |
| We were 25 and 26 when we got engaged. Ring is around 2 carats and belonged to my husband's grandmother - definitely do not plan to upgrade. |
| What does jewelry have to do with relationship discussion? Maybe all these obsessive engagement ring threads should go in the beauty/fashion thread. |
