Anyone with means is going to do what is best for their children aka living in the best school district possible away from the poors/ESOLS/blacks/hispanics

DC Charter system is white flight
Choice in Arlington is white flight
AAP in Fairfax is white flight
Magnets in MoCo is white flight

See a pattern

What? You mean Asian flight?

whites and asians are interchangeable silly :-p its all about ses anyway I mean upper income blacks do the same thing

But aren't the Asians fleeing from the whites in cases of AAP and TJ?

The evidence seems to show that whites are fleeing from Asians in the case of TJ.

umm no

White applications have gone down as the Asian %age has gone up. White flight from Asians.

Asians don't care about race they care about test scores and education.

whites do too

except for some liberals who have more guilt about things but in the end don't really do anything different than anyone else

Charter movement in DC is NOT white flight. It is black flight. Why are black families who go to charters, privates and suburbs for better schooling completely invisible? Discuss.
Anonymous
Because most on DCUM only pay attention to about a dozen so-called HRCs and they don't see a lot of black students at them. Ergo charters must be majority white.

The reality is quite different and more complex of course.

I suppose for the same reason the white students in MS and HS in DC, who are not the majority at any of those schools are nonetheless accused of segregating themselves from other races. In other words, the facts don't make for steamy political discussions.

Then you're obviously not at a DC Public or Public Charter School. So, why are you posting here?

who started this whole "butthurt" thing? It's the grossest slang and I can't wait for people like PP to abandon it and grasp onto the next popular word.

It's a gamer term. From like 2008.

That means the mom who used it moves in my circles.

You would make more sense if you substituted "poverty flight" or "blight flight." It's not just whites who care about high-quality schools, upper-income AA families don't want to put their children in low-quality schools either.

Agreed!

Fact is charter schools are KEEPING white students in public schools in DC which ALLOWS for integrated schools. Get it? Without charter and/or magnet schools there would be no white students outside of upper northwest. There would be no integrated schools. Charters are the solution, not the problem

So how do you explain the phenomenon of Brent, Maury and Tyler Spanish Immersion having become majority white when, a decade ago, there weren't white kids in the elementary grades at these schools/programs? If the DCPC Board had permitted charters to open in the heart of Cap Hill, we almost certainly wouldn't have several neighborhood schools/programs most in-boundary families are happy with.

The whole point here is that public schools suck and will always suck and there will be no meaningful integration until the idiot bureaucrats discover that you have to have safety in the classroom as a pre-req. No safety, no integration. When you mix in kids from problem environments, and a small number of those kids had intense behavioral issues, people are going to flee unless the kids with behavioral problems are dealt with in a meaningful way, i.e. pull them out into a reform school until they get their stuff together. Otherwise, screw the thought of integration.

It is not only safety which is major pre-requisite but it is also academics. There needs to be serious flexible tracking in separate classrooms when there are many kids years behind grade level since differentiation does not work in this environment. You cannot expect parents with kids working several to many years above grade level to accept a classroom teaching to the lowest common denominator.

Middle and high school completely different issue, and really where the problem is. Elementary is easy.

Also, charters create a sense of possibility that families can find a school scenario that could work for them. When Two Rivers opened near Capitol Hill the only school that had any white children in the area was the Capitol Hill Cluster School. My house wasn't in that boundary and a spot was a long shot there. I toured Key ES in Georgetown was the only next possibility. Then Two Rivers opened and I could imagine a possibility there and our family decided to stay on Cap Hill. Others, too. Enough saw the possibility outside of the Cluster School and banded together to see if Brent could work. But a charter was the catalyst. Sorry. True story
