Glad his prayers were answered.

Good luck!

Wow!!!!!!! My husband and i thought we were being proactive in having our son take an HSPT prep class, he went every Saturday since July 2017. He took the exam in December and still scored very low. We're praying that the previous post are accurate and other components of the applications will be considered. I will follow up with his outcome.

Same here PP. I was shocked by the scores with composite being 28! Had mostly average but math was really low. I too will post the outcome. I don't believe kids got in with lower than 50 but I'm praying.

And, there are Catholic kids at Deal.

Nobody said there isn't Catholic kids at Deal. Who cares. What poster is saying is that kids go through the years of paying tuition and Catholic school get a preference!! I agree that they should and my DC is a Catholic applicant coming from outside Catholic elementary/middle.

Sorry for typos. Meant kids who have been in Catholic and paying tuition for years get a preference. They should...,,

I meant it is also possible that after the Catholic school kids, Catholic public school kids may also get a closer look, then the non-Catholic kids. Not sure, but it would make sense.

Plus straight As from public school doesn't mean much. Publics give out As like candy.

Stop saying this. It just isn't true.

--parent of an A/B student with top percentile scores.

It is true. Send your kid to a private school where they won’t be coddled. All of the retakes make it worse.

Having switched our middle schooler from public to Catholic I can tell you that the hardest part was so how far behind academically the Catholic school was. Great school, just not as much of an academic push.

To the other PPs we have had multiple children go public to SJC and GZ. All scored horribly on the HSPT. Just kind of how it is for the public school kids since it is just a different beast than what they are used to. For my kids the teacher recs and transcripts were very strong which definitely got them in. Both ended up testing into advanced math even with abysmal HSPT scores.

Thank you PP. Mine DC scored horribly coming from a K-8 and applied to the same schools. A/B student with what I believe are good Recs. Good activities and sports. This gives me hope. Do you mind sharing what horrible is? Thanks again.

Retakes?

Yes, retakes. It teaches students that you can blow off exams and assignments since you will always have another chance. It's no wonder something like 1 out of 4 college students need to take remedial classes.

My older son got a 98 and goes to DeMatha. My younger one got a 99, and will go to either DeMatha or the Heights, whichever has the best financial aid package.
