Tips on Getting in to First Class

Anonymous
Not to come off as a snot, but if you have to ask you're probably not getting in 1st or business. Except in rare situations, there are only two ways to get into first and/or business: 1. buy the ticket 2. fly a lot and rack up a lot of miles.

I've brought my baby into first. She's going to annoy some one on the plane.

I have always cringed with children on flights myself and still do, but if there isn't a no child rule, I'll totally be THAT PERSON if it makes my kid more comfortable to have more space in a pod than in coach. Their comfort is my #1 concern. I'm not overly concerned about their behavior since all of their other flights they have been quiet and they are pretty calm and laid back. They are wiggly now and are large. I'd always take them for a walk if they got loud.

If we can't get me in first, I probably will just let my husband be on baby duty!

If this is a domestic flight, there are no pods in 1st class, just bigger seats. And you're still next to someone else so it's not like your child will have all this room to move around.

If you book the ticket on points, you're not getting upgraded.

You suck, OP. Your precious little snowflake's comfort doesn't trump that of other passengers. Babies don't belong in first class, period.

I don't know the other people on the flight.
I know and care about my son so in my mind his comfort trumps everyone even mine. If first class banned kids I wouldn't think about it (i.e. I no longer ride in the Amtrak quiet car) but it isn't so I'll consider it.

I am a measly silver level on United which means that I am typically #30 on the upgrade list for the 2 available seats in first class. So unless the flight is completely devoid of frequent flyers you are unlikely to have a shot. I was upgraded once on a flight at Christmas, I guess because it was all leisure travelers and because this plane had an unusually large first class. Otherwise I am happy just to get economy plus.

Domestic first class is no great shakes anyway. It's not worth points for sure. But check your DHs account to see if he's got any upgrades.

Yeah we are only silver too.

That is an ignorant statement. I have been on plenty of flights where the most annoying people on the flight are adults, and yes even first. You may be able to afford to sit in a particular class but it doesn't mean you have class.

You're right. OP sounds like she fits into the "most annoying people on the flight" category. See, e.g. her intention to be "THAT PERSON." What a bitch.

Why do you feel the need to call me a bitch? Very uncalled for. I guess I must be one of the most annoying people on my flights of they are people who take their seat and begin to read and don't really do much else. How awful those people like me are! I never said anythjng mean spirited to anyone here.

Who are these horrible people who hate babies on airplanes and who say babies don't belong in first class?

Are you also going to say that certain ethnicities don't belong in first class either???

Are there certain ethnicities that are prone to screaming for no reason and crapping their pants?

Stop being obtuse.

Some people would say yes!

Take turns who sits in first with the baby and who sits in economy alone

You can't use upgrades on a ticket bought with points.

And agree with this poster. My husband is a 1K on United and even he doesn't get an upgrade all the time - maybe 75% if its domestic. Very very rarely if it's international.

Some flight attendants won't let you do this. We had one flight where they said only the passenger assigned to the first class seat can actually sit there.

Was just going to say this. We had the same xperIence. Something about needing to match all passengers to their assigned seats or something. You can try and be sneaky but the Furst Clads flight attendants typically know every single person sitting in their class. Not to be rude, but you mentioned your husband is traveling for work. When my husband travels for work, he actually works on the flight. Taking care of one of our kids during the flight would have been a no go. Especially since some client is paying for him to fly out there first class...

+1.

You cannot have two lap babies yourself and neither can your husband. For safety reasons, one adult can hold one child. You and your husband need to each hold a baby in whatever seats you end up in.

Check the airline. Many airlines do ban lap children from first class. We flew one international carrier and children under 2 were not allowed in business class.
