I think having a basic cereal on hand + eggs in the fridge that the guests are free to cook up works.
Parfait bar that you describe also sounds nice. Coffee & tea too. |
| I don't expect anything but when I have houseguests I always have coffee, all sweeteners, cream, milk and powdered creamer, pastry or donuts or coffee cake, fruit. |
| Definitely have bread for toast with good butter and jam for UK houseguests. Avoid donuts or danish. Too sweet for British morning tastes. |
| Pancakes from Aunt Jemima. They can't get pancake mix in the UK. |
| Are any of them children? If so, I would add milk to the list and have some eggs around. |
| I always have muffins on hand when guests are here. Plus one morning I'll whip up a hot breakfast (pancakes, eggs, bacon, etc). |
| How about planning at least one hot breakfast? Always makes people feel special. For houseguests that just stayed at my house over the weekend - I served egg burritos (scrambled eggs and cheese in flour tortillas) with strawberries, as well as baked oatmeal (which I prepared the night before). Super easy to throw together. |
| This is very interesting. During the week - I typically have cereal and sometimes oatmeal or eggs & toast. On the weekends I want a hot breakfast - preferring pancakes, french toast, or waffles. When I'm a house guest I'm more flexible, but I will go shopping or pick up breakfast if the host doesn't provide a hearty enough breakfast. My Mom is happy to skip breakfast, so I'm used to accommodating to different styles when I'm not home. When I'm at my parents' house, I bring food and cook for everyone. When I have house guests - I provide a full B&B type spread (hot item, eggs on hand, yogurt, fruit, bread, milk, juice, cereal). |
We always seem to host over the weekend and we always always have a hot breakfast on the weekend! For our last house guests, we had an overnight french toast bake (Pioneer Woman) which I prepared the night before and served with fruit and bacon. The next morning we had eggs, bacon, and toast. Next time I want to serve the TJ's crossiants though, so good!! We also always have things like yogurt and cereal on hand, bananas and apples in the fruit bowl that they can grab anytime. And lots and lots of coffee

Sounds perfect for me. I personally also like good homemade muffins on vacation (more than croissants!). And lots of fresh fruit. A frittata is fairly easy to prep too. Doesn't hurt to ask too. |
| Def doesn't hurt to ask! Personally I am not a picky eater, but I happen to hate yogurt. So granola and fruit would be okay, but I'd be hungry pretty quickly. A muffin or pastry would be nice - even better some eggs. I could even cook them up myself. |

Coffee and a muffin/scone/english muffin/bagel would be ideal.
My in laws have the HUGE pancake, hash brown, bacon, sausage, eggs ordeal and I hate it. It's so big and then I feel like a stuffed sausage the rest of the day. I actually dread waking up there because of it. They spend about an hour cooking and an hour eating it. |
+1 on frittata, esp if guests are staying thru the weekend. You can prep all the veggies the night before. Very simple to throw together the next morning and people seem to always love them. |
| I would ask. Different people have different preferences. And sometimes the same people have different preferences at different times. If I want to be decadent and really enjoy myself, I'd love coffee cake, chocolate croissants, muffins, that sort of thing. But if I'm trying to lose weight or be careful, I'd prefer cereal with low fat milk. And always lots of coffee and orange juice. |

I always make this for the first morning we have guests. You can make it ahead and bake it in the morning. Super good and very impressive - I think guests appreciate knowing you put in effort. If you have three days, varying the type of offering keeps things interesting.
http://www.kraftrecipes.com/cooking-tips/step-by-step/breakfastbrunchrecipes/brunch-bake.aspx The next day I would do the fruit & yogurt & granola thing. The last day I would do the croissants, with a fruit salad. Of course lots of coffee/tea and juice Have fun! |
