yes, that was good ol' boy Dubya who doubled his own salary.

Actually I believe the increase was put in place by Congress and approved by Clinton in 1999.

Would it be better to provide a token payment like $1?

Sure and that way we can make sure only the super wealthy will ever run for POTUS. We don't want non-multi millionaire types to run for the job, do we?

Good point but realistically aren't most candidates quite wealthy and well connected by the time they run for the position?

I don't think most candidates are independently wealthy enough but they definitely are connected!

Clinton wasn't independently wealthy before becoming POTUS. Obama had those nice book deals, but was it enough to make them independently wealthy?

IT seems like once they leave the White House, that's when the serious money comes in.

I don't think they are Romney, McCain or Bloomberg wealthy but they or their spouses are from wealthy families (Bush, McCain) and/or have high paying jobs as executives (Bush) or lawyers (Clinton, Michele Obama, Edwards).

Not to keep defending W, but:

"Effective Jan. 1, 2001, the salary of the president of the United States was increased to $390,000 per year including a $50,000 expense account. Any unused amount of the $50,000 expense account is returned to the Treasury.

The increase came as part of the Treasury Department appropriations included in the Consolidated Appropriations Act 2001 and signed into law by President Clinton on Dec. 21, 2000.

"For compensation of the President, including an expense allowance at the rate of $50,000 per annum as authorized by 3 U.S.C. 102, $390,000: Provided, That none of the funds made available for official expenses shall be expended for any other purpose and any unused amount shall revert to the Treasury pursuant to section 1552 of title 31, United States Code: Provided further, That none of the funds made available for official expenses shall be considered as taxable to the President." -- as printed in the Congressional Record, December 15, 2000 (Vol. 146, No. 155). WHAT is the obsession about making 400k on this board? Is that your secret to happiness? I have news for you.

Many surgeons will tell you that they make X, when that is their revenue. They forget to remove the expenses, to come up with the income. Also, doctors who practice out in the middle of nowhere, do make a lot of money, but they have to LIVE out in the middle of nowhere.

My friend's an eye doc (can't spell it) and makes $800K. Does a very specialized type of eye surgery and lots of research. Works for a university. I'm looking forward to socialized medicine.

Why? You could have put in the time too? Trust me, no system is going to make him get out of bed in the morning for pennies. Many docs will either retire or go part time. Too much stress if you're not being well paid. I want the guy operating on my eye to be well compensated, so he has something to lose. Just like my pilot. The only way to get the best people to do this is to pay them.
BTW, when you get the socialized medicine, are you also going to give up the right to sue?

I'm not advocating socialism but I don't know if that is true. Once you pay people a certain amount, other things come into play (eg work environment, appreciation for work, etc). Money grubbers aren't always the best people. And sometimes the best people aren't paid a lot.

Over time, quality will slip if you underpay professionals. Again, I don't want a 25K pilot flying across the Atlantic. In many other professions, the outcome of mistakes aren't as obvious. When a teacher is bad, that might be (hopefully) only one year out of a child's education. That could be disastrous in some cases, but mostly not. There is time to fix it. But if your pediatrician does not give a vaccine, or a radiologist misses a spot on a mammogram, there might be no room for a fix. Not all doctors are money grubbers. But yes there are many who will do unnecessary surgery. For the most part, most do the right thing.

$400K? Who cares? 4400K That isnt that great. Who makes $1, $2, $3 million and up? Big Law Firm Equity Partners (Williams &Connelly, Gibson Dunn, Skadden Arps, Latham Watkins, etc...), Top Executives, Hedge Fund Managers, old style bond traders and top o' the heap lobbyists (many of whom are now in jail like Abramoff). Those are the big salaries. and those may be nothing but memories...

Certain other medical specialties, too. I know a diagnostic radiologist who's first job this year is paying him $400K.
