People working in finance - everything from hedge funds (did you see yesterday's NYT Biz Section front page?) to investment bankers to private equity guys....
Senior executives at large corporations. People who are very good at sales (esp. sales to the govt.) Lobbyists I've known a few authors who made this much. The old head of the Smithsonian even make $400k +. (Before he was fired.) |

Let's be clear, we're not talking about GOVERNMENT lawyers! I know whereof I speak...
Now: Partners and higher-ups in consulting firms. Successful investment bankers and hedge fund managers. Orthopedic surgeons. Successful entrepreneurs. There's a lot of range in a lot of those jobs, though. Oh, and President of the United States! |
| Thought the POTUS salary was limited to $170k or $200k? But of course he probably makes extra money off things done out of office like writing books, speaking engagements and investments. |
| Certain on-air talent at the networks and cable news channels. Notice I didn't say reporters. |
| POTUS got a pay raise sometime in the past 5 or 10 years. Doubled from the previous salary of around $200k to around $400k. |

first job out of medical school? |
yes, that was good ol' boy Dubya who doubled his own salary. |
| I think diagnostic radiology can be outsourced, i.e. to India. Won't be big bucks forever. |
Actually I believe the increase was put in place by Congress and approved by Clinton in 1999. |
Would it be better to provide a token payment like $1? |
Regular radiologists read scans and these jobs can (and are in an ever increasing basis) be outsourced to India. These doctors make a decent living but not as much as diagnostic radiolgists. Diagnostic radiologists do radiologic guided procedures (biopsies, etc). In medical billing, the ability to do procedures and lots of them is everything. Therefore these guys can make a killing and are among the best compensated in medicine. They're known to be the big $$$$ field and their jobs can never be outsourced. It is an incredibly competitive field to get in to and each major medical center only has a handfull if that. |
| According to my dad (a diagnostic radiologist), the glory days are over. Reimbursement per procedure is being reduced. Radiology groups compete for contracts from big insurance companies, and once a group wins a contract, the insurance company can reduce the amount they are paying per procedure, since they are providing such a large percentage of the group's work. Also, medicare reimbursement is constantly being reduced. Telecommuting is also affecting the practice of radiology. On one hand, some x-ray films can be read in India, as previously noted; on the other hand, my dad is able to do a fair amount of work from his cabin in Maine on vacation. |
Sure and that way we can make sure only the super wealthy will ever run for POTUS. We don't want non-multi millionaire types to run for the job, do we? |
