The book and the mini series are two different things. Its OK for the book to be long -- Sig Larson was 1000s of pages, as well as other trilogies. A TV/movie cannot do that -- they are different mediums.
After ISIS I am not crazy about the series deviating into Stannis burning his daughter. Does not happen in the book. |
| Can anyone explain why Jon Snow's sword destroyed the White Walker? I thought only 'dragon glass' killed white walkers? |
That was the shocking discovery: Valerian Steel also kills them. Dun dun DUNNNN! |
*Valyrian |
His sword is Valyrian Steel. There are only a few Valyrian steel swords left in the world, since none have been made since the Doom of Valyria (and nobody knows how to make it anymore.) It's harder and sharper than normal steel and is rumored to have been forged with magic spells. I don't think anyone knew that Valyrian Steel could kill a white walker until Jon actually did it. Valyrian steel did not exist 8000 years ago, the last time the White Walkers showed up in Westeros. The White Walker was pretty surprised when the sword didn't shatter. |
| I've liked all the changes so far, except Stannis' portrayal in general and his sacrificing his daughter in particular. That was heartbreaking. |
| I'm calling it now: the dragons are going to be the answer to the white walkers situation. (Sorry if everyone's already speculated this.) But...did anyone find it kind of f-ed up that Dany just peaced out on her crew? Am I missing something there?? |
I did. Tyrion doesn't die so I assume they end up getting out. I guess because she's the Queen and that's all that matter. I did think the dragon wasn't going to live. |
| drogons before bros |
I guess. Also, that Melisandre's really starting to p*** me off. She's almost as bad as Joffrey. |
Ugh I know! I did read somewhere (but can't recall where now) that GRRM confirmed that Shirreen would be sacrificed in a later book. I wonder how many of the changes are total diversions vs. future book spoilers. I'm reading book 5 now and am ok with some of the changes- if the TV series was moving at the glacial pace of books 4 and 5 it would take forever. And what else were the TV producers supposed to do with Sansa's character exactly? Her book or ran out at the end of series 4. |
\ it also could be just that there is something special about jon snow? |
Could be, though I watched a recap with the directors On Demand and that's how they explained it. I remember because DH and I were like, "Oh the sword must have dragon glass on it!" We were wrong.

i know right? The scene in the book is different in important ways. She goes out into the pit to save Drogon because he's getting speared (he lands in the pit, presumably intrigued by all the bloodletting.) She doesn't have her bros around her when she flies off, and she climbs on him to remove a spear, not to fly away (he just takes off once she climbs on.) So it really wasn't purposeful in the book. |
