I didn't get our letter today. Anyone else?
|
Maybe no news is good news. We were waitlisted. |
| My number was around 23 for K in the past and was invited a few weeks into the school year. We declined since things were going alright at our home school and we didn't want to put DC through a big change after settling in. |
| I got our letter today. Waitlisted at all the schools. How much do the lists move? |
| Rising 1st grader is wait list #2 for Sligo. Part of me expects that we'll ultimately get in this year but I don't want to have unrealistic expectations. Fingers crossed. |
| We got a Sligo French spot, #104 for rolling terrace |
| That's great - congrats! Are you going to take it? |
| Yep |
| Has anyone considered moving to DC? They have inboundry schools tht offer dual-languge in Spanish. |
Yes, for parents who are really interested in immersion, there are other options in the area. It may be too late to lottery in to some of the VA schools, though, making Oyster one of the only guaranteed options out there. |

I am trying to figure out how the language immersion es in MC work.
Are the immersion programs just options at elementary schools? In other words, if I am moving into a neighborhood where the assigned school has an immersion program, is my kid guaranteed a space, just not in the immersion program? Or, would they need to lottery in to the school and then, if no spots were available, go to some other nearby es? I have called a couple of different numbers (no straight answer) and cannot find a clear answer on mcps website. Any clarity is appreciated! |

I think the website actually answers these pretty well - it varies by program. The overal Q&A answer says the following (https://www.montgomeryschoolsmd.org/uploadedFiles/curriculum/specialprograms/admissions/Immersion%20FAQs13.14(1).pdf):
7. What factors are considered in the lottery? Depending on the program, there are approximately 26 or 52 seats available in the lottery for students entering kindergarten. The available seats in the lottery for students entering Grades 1–5 are those seats vacated by students who withdraw from the program. Factors that may be considered when running each school’s lottery include— • the student’s high school cluster (eligibility); • seats available for Grades 1–5; and • the student’s older siblings in Grades K–4 who currently attend the immersion program to which the child is applying. All other assignments are made by a random lottery process. Then if you look under Admission for each language, it describes the process: https://www.montgomeryschoolsmd.org/curriculum/specialprograms/elementary/immersion-spanish.aspx https://www.montgomeryschoolsmd.org/curriculum/specialprograms/elementary/immersion-chinese.aspx https://www.montgomeryschoolsmd.org/curriculum/specialprograms/elementary/immersion-french.aspx |
Your kids is always guaranteed a place in their neighborhood school, then would have to lottery for the language immersion program. Some programs give preference to kids that are zoned for that school, but not all. The links in the PP have the details. |
