MCPS is all about dumbing down the curriculum. Of course the magnets and HGCs don't advance that goal.
God forbid there are any opportunities (either in the neighborhood schools or in the magnets) for anyone to excel and achieve in this system. I believe that in an ideal situation there wouldn't be a need for the magnets b/c in an ideal situation, the neighborhood schools would have pathways to excel. That isn't the case. Now, it is clear, that the magnets are being gutted as well. Pretty soon, all the kids will just be "proficient" -- whatever the hell that means. |
| Plenty of brilliant kids - magnet & non/magnet, private & public - competing at MD Space Business Roundtable Final Frontiers science competition. |
And that proves what? |
I have to disagree. My daughter is reading several grade levels ahead, and her teachers are challenging her. My son, who had speech and fine motor delays, is in K doing just fine. He loves writing now, has homework (very minimal) each night, and is learning how to read. I hardly think this is dumbing down. In fact, the benchmarks for each grade are very challenging b/c the Common Core Standards are no joke. Successful instruction begins with a principal who understands the curriculum and encourages teachers to work within the framework to challenge their students. I find that statements like "MCPS is all about dumbing down the curriculum." are often made by ignorant parents. |
Actually I'd rather have designated schools for esol or tracking or G&T schools than a huge, bifurcated school district reallocating funding, teachers, facilities and budget to the bottom students only. Then what's to complain about? Oh my kid doesn't have the diversity experience of sitting in a class with 2 esl teachers where 75% of the time is trying to teach English to a 10 or 15 yo? |
| You would be complained that your child was not in the GT track or that the GT track was watered down to accommodate too many kids or that the non-GT track wasn't preparing your child for college...or...or.. |
It is? It might be clear to you, but it's not clear to me. What MCPS actions, specifically, demonstrate that MCPS is gutting the magnets? |
| My kid has NEVER played BINGO at the magnet at Blair. Never! |
My kid was given a sheet labeled Magnet Bingo. So were many others. |
| It is all about dumbing down schools to match the level of those flocking to MCPS. Checkout the student population at Blair. |
Name the class and teacher. You can't, because you're full of it. |
Have you seen the Naviance for Blair? I have. I wouldn't worry about the student population at Blair, they're doing just fine. |
How do we know that you aren't just one of those boosters trying to get more of the middle class into Blair by painting a false picture? It is the kids who will be graduating in the future who will bear the brunt of the dumbing down by the new principal. Ask Peter Ostrander the magnet coordinator if he didn't come up with the magnet bingo game. I challenge you to have him publicly deny that he did. |
Er, what "false picture?" I simply asked if you've seen the Naviance, an actual factual document, as opposed to your very strong "check out the student population at Blair" line of evidence. |
| How can one look at a particular school's Naviance? Do you have to have a child in attendance in order to look? |
