The RFP in MCPS - are they going to gut the magnet and immersion programs or enhance them?

Anonymous
Is this process a signal that magnet programs are going to fade or might MCPS expand them to meet the demand? Also, I thought the immersion programs were intended to enhance diversity at some schools. The RFP talks about an analysis of whether the programs are achieving their original purpose. Should I read that as an invitation for the study to say hey, it looks like these programs are in some cases pulling high SES kids away from their more diverse assigned neighoborhood school, so just end the program? I assume MCPS already knows what it wants to hear and do and this is just the process side of things.

What's RFP?

Perhaps I'm coming to this late, but I'm not familiar with the RFP you're referencing. Is there a link to an article or the document itself? Thanks.

They're calling it a "Choice Study." If you go to the MCPS homepage, there's a link They are in the process of selecting somebody to perform the study, so it's still very early in the process.

Some of the language in there makes me want to think they want to get rid of them, which is a crying shame.

If I had the finances I would start my own school. And MCPS could take a flying fuck.

If it costs extra money to fund these programs, how can they justify their continuation while simultaneously failing to provide basic adequate facilities to students (watch the recent BOE testimony regarding inadequate facilities)? Alternatively, if they don't require any resources beyond what is required in all other classrooms, it makes zero sense to not expand the programs to meet demand.

Are they paying extra to the teachers? Transportation cost could be an issue as well. Since these programs are funded from the "Special Needs" program - will they shelve the SN programs as well?

I see it as a stupid way to close the "achievement gap".

No, they don't pay extra to the teachers. The extra transportation cost is truly marginal. And no, they're not going to shelve the special needs programs, which are required by federal law.

Amen.

All the notes and press following Starr's recent Townhall show that he is focused on ESL and the achievement gap. They already have run their budget into the ground so now it will come from other programs.

The Blair magnet program has been gutted by the principal who behaves like a teenager. Kids in the one of the most prestigious programs are now being asked, get this: to play BINGO. Until parents take a aggressive action to stop the gutting of the program in the name of closing the gap the gutting of magnet programs will continue. Wake up people!!

And then you'd have parents complaining to you about what you are not doing right. Sorry, it's hard to make everyone happy.
