Because they have high-SES parents. |
Adderall - part of the normal drug culture there. It gives them hyper focus to do well in school. I've never done it, but I had a friend once in HS who did it. She was a really good person, excellent student. But she felt the pressure. She took it once during finals. It gave her bad side effects; scared her sh1tless and decided never to do it again. But, it had its desired effects in that she was able to really focus and retain a lot more information. |
You are confusing adhd with drug abuse. Aderal or amphetamines enable those with adhd to concentrate, those without the disorder become manic and cannot focus. |
They aren't all doing well. I live in a townhouse neighborhood in Wootton and most of the kids in my immediate neighborhood are doing drugs. and not all are academic superstars. Most smoking pot. Many don't make it to college other than community college. Which is fine. Just not what you think of when you think of Wootton. |
People take it illegally for the stimulant effect. |
They aren't ALL excelling. And in an environment where drugs are readily available, vulnerable kids are, well, vulnerable. My point was that drugs are everywhere, not just at the dreaded red zone schools, and in some cases more available in wealthier areas. |
Exactly. If you don't have ADHD, all it is is speed. |
Adderall is an amphetamine if you have ADHD, and it's an amphetamine if you don't have ADHD. It increases alertness, concentration, and focus if you have ADHD, and it increases alertness, concentration, and focus if you don't have ADHD. |

I think all schools are equally good in MCPS. Same quality of teachers and same curriculum.
What is different is that some schools have a very high level of FARMS and ESOL kids. And the population of AA and Hispanics is higher than 60% combined. If in each school ESOL and FARMS can be limited to 50% and AA and Hispanic population can be limited to 60% of total population, then the schools can be in the average range. Maybe one way to improve school performance is to send the bottom 40% from the school and send them to some kind of remedial school. Like we have magnets for gifted, make remedials for bottom performers, but dedicate 2-3 schools entirely for this. |
This is so, so not true. The teaching at Blair and Northwood is horrible. The principal at Blair wouldn't make it outside the DCC or NEC. The problem is that MCPS assigns the dregs to the poorer schools. These idiots want to move up the ladder and do things that are unthinkable outside the NEC and DCC. |
What's the problem with the principal at Blair? I sincerely hope that you don't answer, "She tweets, she takes selfies, and she wants to dismantle the magnet program." |
Not the PP. But she cannot spell and write proper English. |
The same can be said for lots of posters on DCUM, who apparently have fancy, high-powered jobs. |
The difference is that the Blair principal was an Engleesh techr (intentional bad spelling, ya'll). |
