What are the "worst" schools in MCPS and why?

Anonymous
Wondering which schools/clusters to avoid in my home search-price range will likely not buy int a "W" school and we are ok with that. Budget under $600,000.

Anything but the W schools are the worst.

.. yes, if all you care about is high scores and don't mind the spoiled kids, designer drug use, wealthy parents bailing out their kids, etc.

OP - check out the MCPS website - "At A Glance" section. It will give you some idea on the test scores and racial/SES diversity.

If you are ok with living a littler further out, check out homes in the Sherwood or Quince Orchard districts. Also look at Richard Montgomery. There are some nice homes in the College Gardens neighborhood of Rockville that are under $600,000. Good luck!

Keep in mind the curriculum is the same at all, and that there are strong students and teachers in all of the schools.

Historically, the areas with lower incomes had the relatively worse off schools - up county (Damascus, Seneca Valley, Watkins Mill) and northeast county (Paint Branch, Springbrook.)

But that has changed over the years. There are the definite "have" schools (Whitman, Churchill, BCC, WJ), a strong second tier (Wooton, RM, QO, Blair, Einstein, Sherwood, and lots of others) and maybe one more tier. A smart kid can get into any college in the country from any MCPS school.

With a $600k budget, you can find a home in a school district you like in a location and neighborhood you will enjoy.

We attended a Title 1 school. Life was grand. Smaller class sizes, great staff and my kids were challenged (the teachers taught up to their level).

You realize most of the "worst" schools on DCUM is really just classim and racism.

"Oh no, my daughter can't play with a FARMs/Immigrant child. I want her to do well!" Lame.

You want to stay away from any school on the east side of the county.

You want to stay away from random generalizations like the PP's.

"Now" is pretty much the opposite of "historically."

I would say Wooton is top tier now and the housing prices that feed into that cluster reflect that!
